~ Prologue ~
I walked through the forest with a bow and a few arrows in my hand. My parents sent me hunting because I had nothing. I asked my older sister, Siggy, if she wanted to come, but - like usual - she was too busy with Earl Haraldson, her husband. She had two sons and a daughter and neither of them wanted to join me. Maybe because I was young - fourteen - and I was nothing in our country, Kattegat.
I knew that I was nothing in Kattegat, but did they have to tell me? Did everyone have to tell me that when I made desicions? I did not care about them or think about them when I was in the forest. I was only focused on getting something for dinner tonight.
I saw a deer several feet ahead of me, but it ran away quickly as soon as we both heard a branch snap behind me. I turned quickly and saw an older man, he looked about my father's age but he was no Norseman.
He grinned evily. "You will do just fine."
