Josh had begged him not to make this trip that nothing at all positive would come from it.
He was probably right, but he needed to try.
Adam carried Dani on his shoulders as they made their way down the long corridor, they had returned from Kim's parents late the previous night.
They stopped at the hospital to visit with Adam and Kim ended up staying the night, pleased that they had received a positive report on Adam's condition.
"Daddy, do you know what?" Dani asked him.
"What?" He asked as he tickled her ankles as she bounced them agains his chest.
She squealed, "Stop it! It's serious dad" her tone fitting her words.
Adam couldn't help but laugh. "I'm very sorry, what is it?"
She sighed, "My tooth fell out and I put it under the pillow like Aunt Erin told me, and the tooth fairy didn't come. Why not?"
Adam instantly felt like shit, it was late when he finally got Dani home and Erin had told him about the tooth falling out and he dropped the ball.
"Gee, I don't know" he covered, "maybe she had some sort of tooth emergency in fairy land. I bet she'll come tonight" she definitely would, and she would leave for more than a few dollars.
He lifted her over his head and brought her to his hip, "Lemme see" he said pointing to her mouth.
She brought her index finger to her lips, "it's this one" her 'S' sounds slurring a bit, "Uncle Jay said the tooth fairy gives you a hundred dollars when it's your first time"
"Oh, I bet he did" Adam laughed.
He put her down, just a few steps from her brother's room, "Adammm!" She called as she pushed the door open.
The building was cold and uninviting which was fitting, he placed his belongings in the tub and slid it through the medal detector.
"Come on through" the guard said, watching as Bob walked through it, satisfied with the results, "Down the hall, third door on your left"
Bon retrieved his items, "You need to put your things in one of the lockers, no cell phones are allowed in the visitation rooms"
He nodded, "I understand" his nerves on overdrive he had tried to grab some breakfast on the drive over but he nearly vomited after one bite.
He found the correct room and pushed the door open, an older woman sitting behind a glass partition called him over.
"Your name?"
"Bob Ruzek"
"Prisoner you're visiting"
"Jeremiah Miller" he told her, he was certain the name burned his tongue as it left his mouth.
Adam picked at the eggs still on his son's breakfast platter, "I gave Cannon and Cory haircuts, it was fun" he relayed, "Cannon said I was the bravest person he knows, isn't that cool?"
