♡ BOYS LIKE YOU
i : city lights
- More lost than I have ever felt, I walked into the chilly August breeze. I shivered.
I was standing outside the airport, awaiting my uncle who lived in New York. I was going to move in with him since the situation at my home wasn't too good, with my mom being a drug addict (who's now in rehab) and a father who ran off and just put me on a flight to a whole new state.
I didn't have a choice and I didn't bother begging my dad to let me stay with him. I didn't feel safe there anyways; every room in the house gave me flashbacks from times I have been trying to forget all my life.
I was fourteen (fifteen by midnight) and because of that, people would give me weird looks.
"Chanel!" Someone called and I quickly looked around. I was so lost in my thoughts and so busy with trying to not draw any attention, I didn't notice the pretty lights from the city.
My jaw dropped, but the voice called my name again. "Chanel!"
I noticed the man who hung with half his body out of his old Volkswagen. Uncle Ron. A smile magically appeared on my face and I run towards his car, my suitcase sloppily rolling behind my feet.
I ran into his arms and got welcomed by his arms wrapping around my shoulders. I inhaled his strong cologne, forty-something-year-old-men-cologne.
"Hey there," Uncle Ron laughed when I tightened my embrace, squeezing his waist. "You missed me, I see?" He joked.
I rolled my eyes, "Sure did." I scoffed and he laughed again.
Uncle Ron got my heavily loaded suitcase in the trunk while I got in the car, welcomed by the warmth of the airconditioner and Hotline Bling playing on the radio. I sighed, letting it all sink that I just was about to live in New York, the city that never sleeps.
Uncle Ron joined me in the car and smiled at me. "Welcome to New York." He said and he turned the volume of the radio up, "You 'bout to have a lot of fun here."
I nodded and smiled plainly, suddenly feeling sick. As an attempt to distract myself I stared out of the window and stared at the high buildings. The city lights, the people that walked around, the streets.
The internet was right, New York really didn't sleep. It was only eleven p.m. but there were still more people walking around than I was used to see at this time. I think I was infatuated with New York and it's ways. I must sound like an idiot saying that, but as I write these words I have no regrets.
I really was. Being used to the manners my parents had taught me, the dry warmth of Phoenix, Arizona and the silence at night that was so silent I almost shit my pants when I heard myself breathe.
In New York, people were real and definitely not perfect. In my little village people pretended.
There I wouldn't see people sitting on the sidewalk with a cheeseburger and a beer, or crying in the subway.
"We here sweets," Uncle Ron waved a hand in front of my face, making me flinch. For a few seconds I was confused, but then I laughed it off and remembered I was in a new state.
