"Will they hurt?" Adam asked innocently. He pushed his sweatpants down and climbed in the bed after his dad slipped the gown on and tied it.
Kim was barely holding it together, she knew she needed to be honest with him. Even though it broke her, he needed to know the truth.
"The tests today won't hurt, but I can't promise that they won't hurt at some point" she grabbed his hand, "but me and daddy will be with you every step of the way"
A nurse came in to get his IV set up.
Little Adam knew what was coming, and he fought it. He folded his arms across his chest locking his hands together, "No! I don't want it!" He yelled his face a bright red as tears welled in his eyes.
"It's just a tiny poke, I promise I'll be gently" the nurse explained.
"No! Please Daddy make her leave" tears streaming down his cheeks.
Adam grabbed his son's shoulders, "Buddy, I wish I could tell her to leave. That I could take you home and that you weren't sick, but I can't. You need to let her put the IV in, we need to get you better" he struggled with his own anger, he could see Kim fighting tears as she sat in the recliner in the corner of the room.
"Once the IV is in buddy, I can have them bring in the XBox does that sound good?" The nurse offered.
Adam shrugged, "You promise to be quick? You won't hurt me?" He slowly unfolded his arms, laying them at his sides.
"I will do my best not to hurt you Adam, and I will be as quick as I can be" her voice calming, Kim read her name tag.
"Thank you so much Samantha" Kim smiled, appreciating the fact that she didn't lie to him and that she was patient with him.
She smiled warmly, "No problem, they'll be up soon to take him downstairs" she said on her way out.
Dr.Miller poked his head in, "Hey big guy, getting settled?" He asked as little Adam was currently involved in a zombie apocalypse of some variety.
Kim looked up from the pamphlet she had been reading, the admissions desk had given it to them it explained all the hospital had to offer and various contact numbers.
"He's good now" she smiled softly, "better than us"
"It's hard, I know. I can't imagine what it's like to be in your shoes right now" he sat beside her, he knew a good bit of 'hand holding' was important at this stage of the game, "but if he was my boy, this is where I would want him. We have the best doctors in the city here and we will get him in remission and cancer free. It's the only option"
A knock on the door, "It's time for the CT scans" he smiled.
"Alright Adam, pause the game" Adam told his son.
"Ah, man. I just leveled up" he said as he tossed the controller on his bed, "how long will it take?"
Dr.Miller patted his leg "about an hour and hour and a half. The game will be here when you get back"
They started wheeling his gurney out, Adam falling in step behind them, "I'm sorry Mr.Ruzek, you'll have to wait here"
"No, I'm going" he said.
Dr.Miller stepped up, "Adam, we need to talk"
"I want my dad to come, please let him come" little Adam begged.
Adam knew he needed to man up for his son's benefit, he leaned over the bed, "Hey listen you're going to be a brave boy. You're going to kick ass and I will be waiting to hear all about it. Okay?"
Little Adam nodded, still unsure.
Adam watched as they rolled his son down the hall, Kim's muffled sobs in the background.
It was only the beginning and he was beside himself with fear, he didn't know how he'd make it through the long haul.
Grateful to he home after a long day of tests and discussing treatment options, Adam sat on the edge of the bed.
He had never felt so overwhelmed in his life, it shredded him when he could hear little Adam crying for him as they wheeled him down the hallway for his scans.
He wasn't used to feeling helpless. He hated it with every ounce of his being, he felt Kim's hand on his back.
He looked up at her, "Is he sleeping?"
She nodded, "he is. It's our last week of normalcy" they'd agreed to start treatment in the coming week, they still needed to tell their families and friends.
Adam pulled Kim into his lap, "I'd like to have a party before treatment. A kick ass party, one that will blow Adam's mind" his voice growing softer as he spoke, "and then we can tell everyone"
Kim ran her hands through his hair, "that's a really good idea"
He leaned up and kissed her, hard and fast his hands traveling towards her hips, "I love you" he mumbled against her lips.
She straddled him, "you locked the door, right?"
"Yeah"
----Note---
It's gonna start getting technical and this is serving as my 'disclaimer' I know I won't getting everything right (medically) but I'm going to do my best.
I've been researching it and going to do the best I can to get it somewhat believable.
Thanks!!
