"Yea, I'm on my way" he told Jay, "I'm at the diner with Kim and the kids. Just give me twenty minutes" this was the part of the job he hated. It would be nice if Chicago's worst could limit their criminal activity to more of a traditional schedule more of a 9-5 gig.

He returned to the table, "I'm sorry baby, we just caught a heater" he could see the look of disappointment on Adam and Dani's faces, "I'm sorry guys"

"It's okay Daddy, just be safe" Dani smiled, she was wise beyond her five years.

"Always sweetheart, see ya man" he bumped Adam's fist with his own, "Sarge, you'll bring them home?" He asked Trudy. She'd been retired a year now, but he'd always refer to her as 'Sarge' the death of her father had hit her hard and made her realize she needed to spend more time with her family.

"We will, just don't screw up Ruzek" Trudy smirked.

"I love you, call me when you can." Kim followed him to the door, "Adam, no falling off balconies please" she stood on her toes and kissed him, "I'll try and wait up"

He grinned, "I love you" and left for his truck.

Kim was laying in bed when there was a knock on the door, little Adam pushing it openly softly, "I can't sleep mommy" he told her as he padded in.

She patted the bed, "You're not too big to lay with your mom, are you?" She asked noticing his cheeks looked flushed, "do you feel okay?" The back of her hand on his forehead, he was warm.

She got up from the bed and grabbed the thermometer from her bathroom, Adam already on the bed taking up his father's usual spot.

"I don't feel bad, but I don't feel good" he tried to explain, "it's weird" he rubbed his eyes he was obviously sleepy.

She ran the wand over his forehead, sighing when she read the results, "You're cooking a fever buddy, it's 101.4" she told him leaving to retrieve the Tylenol.

She poured out the correct dose, "Bottoms up baby" she smiled as he took the medicine grimacing in disgust at the taste.

He pretended to gag, "that's nasty"he used his sleeve to wipe the remnants of the medicine from his lips, "Can I sleep in here?"

Kim kissed his cheek, "yeah, you can"

It was nearly three in the morning when Adam finally arrived home, surprised to find his son in their bed. He went to lift him up, Kim stopping him.

"Don't" she whispered, "he's sick, running a fever" she said softly scooting over so Adam could join them in the now cramped bed.

Adam sighed, "Jesus, Kim he's covered in sweat" the sheets dampened from the little boy's sweat.

Kim felt his cheeks again, his skin felt as if it was on fire, "My goodness" she turned the light on, her eyes squinting as they adjusted to the lit room, "grab the thermometer will you"

Adam went and got it handing it to her, watching as she ran the wand over their son's forehead, "it's 103.2 Adam, I need to call the doctor"

Adam stayed with his now awake son as Kim went to call the doctor, "How are you buddy?" Adam asked applying the cool cloth to his forehead, "what hurts?"

Little Adam rolled over on his side, "My whole body, but I did get sacked a few times today" he offered.

Adam remembered he had laughed at Kim's reactions to her baby boy being tackled, still struggling with it at every game. Always watching from behind Adam or her hands.

"That could be why your body hurts but it doesn't explain the fever" he could hear Kim on the phone with the doctor, he handed his son the remote and went into the living room.

He waited until Kim hung up, "Well what'd he say?" Adam never felt more helpless, he hated seeing his kids sick or hurt.

She sat on the couch, "Just to keep giving him the Tylenol and watch him, if any other symptoms show up to bring him in the morning"

"Okay, he says his body hurts, the game today was pretty rough" he told her. He could see her flinch when he mentioned the game. Their son was still on the smaller side, his doctor predicting he would always be a bit smaller, "maybe it's just a virus or something, yeah?"

"Could be, I know a couple of kids from his class have been sick. I hate seeing him sick, but I won't lie it's the only time he will let me snuggle with him" she smiled, "I just hope he kicks it soon"

Adam laughed, "And doesn't share it" he teased, "I don't want to get sick"

Kim smacked at his arm, "Trust me, no one wants you to get sick" she smiled, "No one wants to hear your whining" she teased him.

"I don't whine!" He grabbed her waist.

"Oh, of course not." She laughed as she sought out his lips, "I really missed you"

"I missed you too, but we can't. A seven year old is  in our bed you know" he whined.

"See!" She pulled back, "you just whined" she laughed.

"Yea, well you started it and now we can't finish it" he laughed, little Adam's voice interrupting their banter.

"Let me go take care of my sweet little man" Kim climbed off his lap.

"I guess I'll go take a shower. A cold one"
