i took the last box out of my moms trustworthy silver road ranger. i didn't have much stuff to bring with, considering i lived in a rabbit-sized dorm for 378 days. yet it took 3 trips to move out everything into my apartment i was finally granted to get since this year i was a sophomore.
"man am i happy you're a bit more spread out from campus now," my mom said as she handed me the last box that was full of some clothes i got from urban outfitters a couple months ago.
"i'm honestly so happy i don't have to deal with trashy college girls smoking weed together in the bathroom, or that i don't have to worry about my roommate stealing my things anymore." i said with relief.
"are you scared? you know i'm only about 30 minutes away, going 70 miles an hour i will make that 20." my mom always got protective and nosy about my health and comfort. it's so bad, it's to the point where she would fight a mother bear for me & where i would voluntarily give myself up as free prey to a mother bear and her cubs if she was ever that protective in front of one of my friends or maybe even a future boyfriend of mine.
"i survived in a school for over a year where girls were raped regularly, boys snuck ecstasy and cocaine onto campus every week never being caught, and where every girl in my dorm hall was failing their classes and trying to steal my macbook for better final results. i think i will be okay momma. don't worry."
"tried my best to reassure her and make her feel like everything was always gonna be okay, like i was the toughest cookie in columbus. but in all actuality, i was terrified. okay, not just terrified. curiously terrified. there was so much out there outside of that campus. yes i would still be going to school but my classes were more spread out these two semesters. i have two a day at convenient times. i have to get a stable job and meet the people out there in this lost world. the crazies and the sane. i myself at 20 years old still do not know which of the two categories i fit into to. my past all throughout middle and early high school, i self harmed, badly, to the point where it was out if control. i have since recovered from that, yet my anxiety is still severe. how i will handle this huge city with my anxiety levels being off the charts? i have no idea. at least at the dorms with the crazy snort-a-line and fuck bitches distracted me from my thoughts. now i'm alone. in this creaky apartment.. figuring myself out.
i snap out of my thoughts that were dragging me under to the sound of a cars engine sparking up.
i look over to find my mom sitting inside the car gesturing me to come over to her rolled down window. i walk over briskly.
"if anything comes up sweetheart you make sure to call me first thing. i'm your number one emergency contact until you get married, understand?"
she says looking me in the eyes a bit sternly.
"what about 911?" i smirk.
"if it's that big of a deal, i guess i'll settle for second." she smiles.
"i love you with all my heart allison."
"i love you too mom, i'll call you later. drive safe."
i back up walking towards the door of my new apartment as my mom drives down the street, away.
away.
away.
you're alone now.
it's just you.
i walk inside the apartment, quickly locking and shutting the door behind me.
i place the last box, full of the clothes i got from urban outfitters, on the floor next to my feet. i look around the worn down, creaky wooden apartment. this is my new home.
my own home.
welcome.
