My name is Becca Johnson and until a little while ago my life was boring and simple. I am seventeen years old, I have a kind of boyfriend and two somewhat close friends, and a bunch of people who know my name laugh when I'm funny and say hi if they see me around. My life changed when I turned eighteen, and not in that well I'm legally an adult so obviously my life is different. It changed like I was thrown into a world full of sadness and violence far worse than what the world has experienced.
I'll start at the beginning. It was May 27th a week before my eighteenth birthday, which was on June 3rd and I was sitting in the library with my friends Josh and Gabi.
"You aren't doing anything for your birthday?" Gabi asked me in utter disbelief. Gabi was tall and skinny, she had olive skin and long beautiful curly chestnut brown hair, and chestnut eyes to match her hair; she was someone you might see in the movies. She was the sweetest girl you could ever know, she believes completely in people's kindness and that everyone has a good heart, but she is also someone who loves fun and socializing with others, she loves parties.
"Gab, she doesn't need to do anything, it just means you won't get any presents." Josh joked with me. Josh was average height, with sandy brown hair, Josh loved to run and he was built like a runner too. Josh had green eyes and was perfectly tanned. He was someone who loved to argue with people, but beyond that he just liked to laugh.
"Thanks." I glared at him then back at my book. I'm about average height, though my family and friends are so tall I feel like a dwarf. I have wavy honey blonde hair and baby blue eyes, I am crazy pale but often turn a bright shade of red for no reason.
"Beck's I will not stand for this." Gabi stated in a jokingly serious tone.
"Gabi, Becca isn't you and cannot become the type to like others." Josh stated.
"I don't dislike others and if you want we can do lunch for my birthday." I told them.
Gabi smiled a little but didn't give up. "Come on! A party would be the perfect place to hang out with Brian." She teased me.
"I don't need an excuse Gabi." I said confidently.
"Really?" Josh asked. Nodding over to Brian who had just walked into the library. "Go say hi, ask him if he wants to come to the movies with us tonight."
"He looks busy." I said nervously.
"Brian!" Gabi called to him. Brian turned around toward us and smiled as he walked over to us.
"Hey Becca." Brian said still smiling; I smiled too. Brian was one of those people whose smile was just contagious. Brian was: tall, he had dirty blonde hair styled like Dylan O'Brien's, but lighter in color. Brian had deep blue eyes that I could get lost in, and he was kind of tanned but not as much as Josh.
"Hi." I said in a day dreamy type voice.
"Brian Becca wanted to ask you something." Josh said.
"Okay." Brian said smiling a little confused now.
"Right, we were talking about seeing the new Star Wars movie and I was wondering if you wanted to come with us?" I asked trying to calm my nerves.
"Yeah, that sounds great." Brian turned to leave but quickly spun back around. "Hey, your birthday? What are you doing for it?" he asked.
"She's having a party, nothing big we haven't really figured out who's coming yet but don't worry you made the cut." Gabi said.
"No, I'm not." I said.
"She's undecided." Gabi said nodding.
Brian laughed "What time?" he asked.
"Hmm?" I looked at him.
"Tonight?" he said.
"Right, six." I told him.
Brian gave me a nod then turned around and walked away.
I let out a sigh of relief as Gabi and Josh laughed at me. I went back to my work and they continued talking about what I was going to do for my birthday party.
I know it seems like that was an unimportant part of my story, how could that have lead to my life going to hell. It didn't, I just thought it was important to get a sense of my life before I met him.
After school that day I was walking home, Friday could not have come sooner for me. Any way, I was walking down the street and turned the corner when I literally bumped into this guy, I didn't recognize him so he must have been older, there was only one high school in my small town, but it has a very large and popular university, he must have gone there, but he couldn't have been more than two or three years older than me. He had dark black hair, brown eyes, pale skin, he was really tall, and he was pretty skinny but not in an unhealthy way or anything just not large, except his shoulders they were very broad.
"I'm sorry." I said quietly.
"Why? I meant to do that." He said. I figured he was just an overly confident college guy so I didn't think much about it.
"Okay." I said smiling a little weirded out as I walked away.
"Wait!" He called and I looked back at him questioningly. "Why are you in such a rush?" He asked. He walked back up to me. I felt uncomfortable, not because he felt like a threat, something about him seemed innocent enough, at least not scary.
"I have to get home, weekend plans and all." I said truthfully.
"Well, you shouldn't rush places, enjoy what you have. You never know when it could all be taken away from you." He stated. He didn't seem to be aiming to me but maybe it was just his intention, to make it seem like he was talking from personal experience.
"Thanks for the advice." I said still creeped out by this whole ordeal.
"I never caught your name." He smiled at me. I felt my heart flutter for a second, then snapped out of it remembering that I didn't know this guy at all.
"Rebecca." I said rather formally.
"Cool, well I'll let you get home." He said jogging away.
I turned to walk then looked back but he was gone. I'd realized that I didn't know his name. I put my hands in my pockets and felt a piece of paper. I unfolded it and it read: Trust your gut, it will guide you to the truth.
So that was the moment. The one that changed my life, it doesn't make sense now but I swear that was it.
That night I met Josh, Gabi, and Brian at the theater. We bought our tickets and some popcorn and walked into the theater to find our seats I sat in-between Josh and Brian, Gabi on the other side of Josh. The commercials were still playing and the lights still on, lots of chatter going on through the theater, Gabi and Josh talking about some accounting test.
I sat awkwardly next to Brian, we had known each other for a long time and he and I had been on a few sort of dates and kissed once or twice and neither of us dated anyone else, me because nobody else was interested and neither was I and I'm not sure about Brian but he only seemed to hang out with me and his friends. I hadn't heard of any other girls at least and Gabi would have told me, she loves to know what is going on.
"You look really nice." Brian said looking at me.
I smiled at him. "Thanks."
"So, you figure out what your birthday situation is?" Brian asked.
"Gabi, has already started planning a party so..." I said.
"Cool. So I'll be there to rescue you from talking to all of her friends?" Brian asked me and I laughed.
"Yes, I will be your damsel in distress." I said smiling.
"And I will be your prince charming." Brian smiled back at me.
We just looked at each other laughing then the lights went down and Brian kissed me. My heart raced as I kissed him back, and just like that it was over and we were watching the movie. Brian held my hand though, and he wouldn't let go. It was sweet.
