Chapter Two

The bell rung and Sophie and I headed towards the cafeteria for lunch. After ordering we made our way to our usual table near the window, and sat down. "Did you hear the rumours?" She asked. "Yeah, apparently Jake broke up with Nat" I said, causing her eyes widen with surprise. "Really?!" She exclaimed. "Mhm, isn't that what you were going to tell me?" I inquired. "Nope, everyone's been saying that Nathan's planning to ask me to be his girlfriend!" Sophie squealed. "Soph, what did I say? He's a heart breaker!" I reminded her. Looking up from my tray, I realised that Sophie's sapphire eyes were tearing up. "Madison, can't you just be happy for me? For once?" She questioned, her voice merely a whisper. "Soph, you know I'm just worried-" I started. "No. Maddy save it for later, I can't take it right now." She said, before moving her blonde hair out of her face, attempting to blink away the tears and walking off. I tried going after her, but it was no use, she scurried away before I could catch up.

I heard a chuckle beside me. Sighing I turned to face the person. "Ugh, what now Nathan?" I grumbled, after noticing it was him. "Girl dramas I see, what's the issue?" He asked, his blue eyes gleaming in amusement. "Shouldn't you be asking Sophie? Why are you here instead of by her side?" I questioned. He ran his hands through his chestnut brown hair, and sighed. "I have a bit of a problem, that's actually why I came to see you..." He trailed off. I raised an eyebrow, indicating for him to continue. "Well you see, there's some rumours going around." He awkwardly stated. "Rumours about?" I questioned. "Rumours that I'm going to ask Sophie to be my girlfriend." "Yeah, and what am I supposed to do about that?" I asked, placing my leftovers in the nearby bin. "Well, people have been saying that she knows, and I don't know what to do" He said, biting his bottom lip. His plump, red, kissab-. No, stop. He's your best friend's long-term crush. You can't have these thoughts. I don't even have feelings for him; he's just good looking... Yeah, that's it.

A throat being cleared, took me out of my thoughts. "So...will you?" he asked, hopefully. "I'm sorry, will I what?"I asked, awkwardly. "Will you find a way to tell her that it's just a rumour?" He repeated. "What? No I can't, she'll think I'm saying it just to keep her away from you!" Smirking, he started striding away. "Thanks! I knew I could trust you." He shouted over his shoulder as he reached the 'popular' table. Jerk! Just as I was starting to think he wasn't that bad, he goes ahead and proves me wrong.

Making my way to my locker, to prepare for the next class, I realised that Sophie was at her locker too. Attempting to ignore her glares, I gathered all my belongings and shut my locker. To my surprise, she was leaning against the locker next to mine. "I can't believe you! You try separating me and Nathan, and then as soon as I turn my back you're by his side." She shouted furiously. "And to think that I thought you were a true friend! Just stay away from me and everything that's mine, just stop being so jealous of me!" "Sophie! You don't understand! He came up to me to tell me that-" I defended. "Just shut up! I've had enough of you and your stupid lies!" She yelled, giving one final glare and striding off.

Heaving a sigh, I made my way to class.
