I slowly opened my eyes and yawned, getting ready to sleep in again. I glanced at my clock and at the turquoise calendar beside it. There were red marks all over today, which read 'First Day of School.' I looked at the clock. It read 8:25 AM. I gasped, threw off my covers, and changed into the first outfit I found in my closet. After hastily brushing my hair, I pulled on my sneakers, grabbed my backpack, and tried to put my hair into a fishtail braid as I ran down the stairs. I tripped on the last stair, fell down, and dropped my backpack.

"Are you okay?" I heard Uncle Andre shout.

"I'm fine!" I called back hurriedly.

I put my backpack on again was about to run into the kitchen to try and at least eat something small. I heard a door slide nearby and saw Uncle Andre leave his office. Well, more like a room that he'd turned into an office. I noticed that his usual neat, golden, curls were messy and that there were bags under his sky blue eyes. I quickly got off the floor and brushed the dust off my skirt hastily.

"Is something wrong? Why are you up so early?" he asked.

"I have to go to school! I'm late!" I said, running towards the door. He grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"You're going to school?"

"Yes,"

"Right now?"

"It's past 8:30!" I said, annoyed because he didn't understand me. Uncle Andre sighed.

"Sweetie, it's 5:30 in the morning."

I stopped fighting his grip and stared at him with wide eyes.

"What?"

He showed me his watch and pointed to the golden clock hanging above the kitchen counter.

"Oh."

"Is your clock not working?"

I opened my mouth to answer, but then I stopped. I gritted my teeth. Kristen had been in my room last night. She must have messed with it so that this would happen to me.

"No, Uncle, it's fine. If you don't mind, I'm going back to my room now."

Uncle Andre nodded, looking at me with a worried expression. I waved and walked back upstairs slowly.
The pink door next to mine opened slowly, revealing my little sister. She was rubbing her eyes and holding her doll close to her chest.

"Melody, are you okay?" Trinity yawned.

"I'm alright. Go back to bed," I said.

Trinity went to school in a different area than I did, so she wouldn't be starting school until next month.

"I'm not tired," she protested.

"Come on, back to bed." I said. I grabbed Trinity's small hand and took her back to her room. She laid down on her bed and closed her eyes slowly. I pulled her covers up to her chin and smiled.

After closing the door, I went to my own room. I plugged my earphones into the first device I saw, which happened to be my iPod, and played some music.

A while later, there was a knock at my door. "Come in," I muttered. I unplugged my earphones and turned off the music.
Amanda walked into my room. Her green eyes were sparkling, and her hair was curled around her shoulders. She gaped at me when she saw me.

"Melody Juliette Anderson, what in the world happened to you?!" Amanda exclaimed. I winced when she said my full name.

"Not even I know, to be honest. All I know is that I woke up a while ago, thinking I was late for school, and I tried to multitask, and then I fell down the stairs." I said sheepishly. Amanda tried to keep a straight face, but then failed and burst out laughing. When she was done, she shook her head at me, still smiling slightly.
