Where I live, it is always hot. Not the hot of a warm summer day, the hot of swimming in ice cold water and then jumping into a hot spring, or burning your mouth with a hot beverage. This is the hot that would permanently burn the bottoms of your feet if you ventured outside with no shoes, the heat that gives you blisters on every inch of your skin, the kind of hot that kills.
Surrounding our city is desert. There is no one else but us. We are caught in a fishbowl of sand, the glass walls made out of the red desert mountain.
The mayor runs the place, he keeps order in our society. No one knows his secrets, his lies, how could he destroy hundreds of people if he's just 18, two years older than me? Good question. I know the secret, but I can't save us, I too am captured in his iron fist.

The heat wakes me up. I crawl from under my scratchy, thin as paper blanket and throw on my clothes. Here in desert hell, wearing anything warmer than a t shirt could give you heat stroke.
I do not have a job, I am sixteen but I need one to keep me alive. I live by myself, my whole family dying from disease. But no one thinks twice about not hiring me.
