Allison twists the button on her radio, causing the speakers to bump louder with every beat of the newest pop song. In the back seat, Kimberly-or Kim as she liked to be called- let out a loud whoop as she leaned half her body out of the window. Luckily where we're going doesn't usually have cops patrolling the streets so there wasn't a risk of being pulled over because we had a hyper teenage girl hanging out the car. Ally turns around in her seat briefly to catch a glimpse at Kim.
"Hey, eyes on the road Missy," My hands immediately fly to the steering wheel, "sorry but I don't want my tombstone to read 'died on the way to a high school party."
Allison laughs off my comment and once I'm sure it's safe to I let my hands rest in my lap again. I think back to how I even got into this situation, considering I hate parties of any kind. I pinpoint the cause to a week ago when Allison first brought up the topic of a party during our lunch period. The party was, of course, going to be thrown at Brandon James' house, a Senior who seems to be a celebrity among the girls at our school. I personally, couldn't see the attraction. Brandon was frankly a jerk and I wasn't exaggerating.
Contrary to the belief of the female population at my school, including Allison and Kim but excluding myself, Brandon James did not carry a heart of gold behind his douche-y behavior. I knew this because I had lived next to the guy for all of middle school and two years of high school. Within all those years I had gotten to know him pretty well due to the fact that our moms had befriended each other very quickly. My mom often had them over for dinner and we would watch after Brandon whenever his parents had a business trip to take. But, at the end of last year the James family moved to a new, bigger house because Brandon's dad, John, got a promotion and decided he would like to live lavishly. I know its been a year since then and some would like to give Brandon the benefit of the doubt, but I knew better.
Plus, on the multiple occasions where Ally dragged me along with her when she went to talk to Brandon he was no gentlemen. Of course, Ally was blind to his piggish comments and brazen attitude. To her Brandon was the poster child for Perfect. Nothing would change her mind, believe me I tried. No matter how many times I pointed out all the rude things he had said, Ally still thought he was an angel.
With all this in mind, I had rejected the offer right away. However, what Allison forgot to mention was the fact that I had no choice in the matter. In her words, 'He invited me and we're going whether you like it or not'. Apparently, the fact that Brandon had invited Juniors to a Senior party was a big deal, but I knew the real reason we were going was because of Ally's massive crush on Brandon. So, on Saturday I was forced out of my house in my favorite converse and a black hoodie. My outfit made Allison pull a face, but there was no way I was dressing in a skimpy dress and heels that would give me blisters the next day. Allison and Kim did not have the same idea as me, seeing as they were dressed in exactly that. The differences in our style and personality were very apparent, yet somehow we balanced each other out.
While I was very serious and my humor was dry and full of sarcasm, Kim was a giggly mess half the time and her main interests were school gossip and drama. Allison was intelligent, like the rest of us, but often got distracted with boys, Brandon James especially. Both of them like to joke about me being the "mom" of the group and I suppose it was true. I didn't really mind though. There's nothing wrong about being careful or conservative. Nothing at all.
Perhaps the reason we were such good friends is because although I am serious I can also let loose and have fun. I'm not always a stick in the mud, only 80% of the time.
"Here," Kim's probing hand shakes me from my thoughts. In her hand is her pink zebra stripped makeup bag. "If you're not gonna dress up you should at least wear some makeup." I roll my eyes.
"Thanks Kimmy." I say dryly, purposely using the nickname she hates. Kim sticks out her tongue and flops back into her seat.
I flip down the mirror visor and open the bag. Kim has packed nearly her whole bathroom in the bag. There are various shades of lipstick and gold eye shadow among other makeup supplies. I opt for mascara and lip gloss. Nice and simple, the way I like my makeup. Looking into the mirror I apply the strawberry lip gloss, wiping away excess, and mascara that makes my blue eyes "pop" as Kim says. My brown hair is pulled into my regular ponytail but I reach up to let it down. While I mess with my hair, Kim and Allison sing their lungs out along to the radio and I join in, using the brush in my hand as a microphone. When the song fades away Allison's phone starts to buzz.
Allison reaches forward to answer it but I swat her hand away.
"No texting while driving." I echo the slogan of the famous commercials.
Allison rolls her eyes and says something about her being an excellent driver, but I cant be sure because another song starts blaring through the speakers. I watch, wearily as Allison divides her attention between the road and her phone.
"Ally, you really shouldn't be-" I start to say, but a blinding light flashes in my eyes and I feel the car swerve.
My stomach turns and I hear Kim and Ally screams mixed with the sound of tires screeching and glass breaking. The car suddenly jerks to a stop and my body lurches forward hitting the dash in front of me. The last things I see before I black out are the faces of my two bestfriends.
