Florrie was walking home, like every other day of her forever repeating week, it meant she was listening to something on her phone. Today was a Rolling Stones kind of day, so she was listening to Paint it Black. The pace of the song matched her walk, every step was in unison with the music.
Un-be-known to her, the cars were making their usual noise, as they drowned out the distant chirp of birds. The sound of motorcycles and the mumble of peoples conversations were far too much for anyone. Some people had joined Florrie, and were also wearing earphones. No doubt listening to their favourite music, or the latest pod-cast of someone they find far more interesting than themselves. They all marched through the shopping center, like an army of brain dead civilians to reach their destination of home. Everyone was far too busy talking, thinking, or doing their own thing to notice the red door.
The red door had been there since the shopping center was built, but today Florrie found herself watching it, as soon as she came in to sight with it; even before she had seen it, she was thinking about it. Drawing closer, she just had the sudden urge to open it, but have no idea why. She was loosing herself in deep thought. All about the red door, that may have magical secrets behind it. Though she new it was just a janitors cupboard.
As she came closer to the door, she was pushed out of the way by a man. She snapped her head up to try and catch sight of him, but only saw his brown coat swish between the now closing red door. She gathered herself and starting to walk again, she started to replay her song from the beginning as she had lost concentration, and had lost all interest of the door until she took two steps and fell back into the drowning wonder of it, and was lost in a trance. She couldn't take her eyes off it. She knew that there was something wanting her to go in, but deep down inside herself she feared it. But why should she? She had waltzed, marched, sprinted, jogged, and dawdled past it for years, and never once wanted it then. So why now?
She found her feet changing their path, and started to go across the shopping center towards the right hand wall, she could feel herself changing her plans for this evening, as they weren't incredibly important. She knew she could reschedule. She knew she had time for a quick look through the door way. She knew she had nothing to loose to this new sense of curiosity. Her hand touched the brick wall as she kept walking, as though it was trying to get a grip, to stop her.
But whats more, she wanted had the same impulse to find out who that man was, and why he went in. Why was he in such a hurry?
Her feet took quicker steps, in hope that they'd reach the destination much quicker, and they did. Florrie had done it, she was now outside the door, the door that now wanted her to open it, and she only wanted to obey this impulse that she couldn't ignore. She dripped the handle and took one last step, the step that meant she had got what she craved so much.
She was beyond the door, and now stood in darkness. A darkness that was very overwhelming. She couldn't escape it, as she fell further and further into what had replaced her sudden feeling of impulse, to fear. Florrie could tell that she had made a huge mistake, one that she would regret forever.
Or at least that's what she thought.
