I sat at my desk, tapping my feet on the ground and staring at the math packet in front of me. However, a voice interrupted the staring contest I was having with the paper.
"Hey Vic?" my best friend said.
"Yes Carl?" I responded, answering to my name.
"Have you even started working on the math yet? Mrs. Jones says its due at the end of the hour."
"Uh, well, I haven't started yet. What about you Grimes?" I said, raising an eyebrow.
"Absolutely not." He giggled.
"Lets do it together then."
Carl and I aren't exactly popular. I guess we're pretty average. We don't have a lot of friends. Actually, we really only have each other and a ton of acquaintances.
We finished the math packets a little bit early because we're a fantastic team. As we walked towards Mrs. Jones desk, I noticed she looked stressed, even a little scared. I tugged on Carl's sleeve.
"Do you think she's okay?" I whispered to Carl.
Carl responded by shrugging, half smiling, and continuing to the teachers desk.
"Mrs. Jones? We finished!" We said in unison. I glanced at him and he glanced at me. Then we broke down laughing. You'd be surprised how often we talk at the same time.
"Oh! Um, okay. You can, uh, turn them in here." She motioned to any empty area on her her desk and ran her hands through her wild hair.
Soon after we turned in our work, the bell rang. We raced to our lockers and out onto the front lawn of the middle school.
"Your mom is picking us up today, right?" I said.
"Yeah, I think you're staying the night tonight, with your parents being out of town on that business trip and all." Carl said as he slung his back pack onto his back.
"Shall we?" I said in my best British accent.
"M'lady," he took a bow "we shall." Carl said as he took his took my arm.
We walked towards his moms car, our feet moving in sync.
The closer we got to the car, the more anxious I felt. I could tell Lori was worried. I still had Carl's arm. We glanced at each other and broke into a sprint.
"Hey mom!" Carl said as we approached. "Is everything alright?"
"Carl, Vic, I need to tell you something and I need you to try your best to be brave. It's you dad Carl... He got a shot during a chase. He's alive, but in a coma. He's in the hospital and the doctors are doing everything they can." Mrs. Grimes choked out.
Carl's arm let go of mine and dropped to his side. Tears burned my eyes. I don't even really know why. I mean, Rick is alive. Maybe I was just scared. Maybe it was because Mr. Grimes could have died. I didn't know, but I also didn't care. I covered my mouth to stifle a sob. Rick was such an amazing man. He always took care of me when my parents were out of town on business trips.
I wiped my eyes with my sleeves and pushed my fearful thoughts of fear into the back of my mind. I had to be strong. Carl needed me.
Carl stood with his head hung low. We slowly made our way to the car and climbed into the back. The car ride was long and silent. Lori finally parked around the corner from Carl's house and spoke up.
"We can't go see him until tomorrow. The doctors said he has to undergo surgery. I promise we will go and see him first thing tomorrow. "
And with that she opened the car door and started her trek to the house, leaving Carl and I in the car to digest all the information we had received.
