"Gwen, there isn't going to be one. Besides, he got hit by a car while walking across the street. I think it was Tim who hit him." I say.
"What? Why do you tell me these happy things and then these sad things. Dang girl you cause emotional roller coasters."
I sigh. "Gwen, seriously I feel so bad."
"I have an idea. Let's visit him in the hospital!"
"I tried that already. They wouldn't let me in. Family only."
"Hm family." I hear her mumble. I could basically hear Gwen wiggle her eyebrows. "I'm picking you up in ten minutes and you better be ready." she hangs up.
Knowing Gwen this is going to be interesting. Very interesting.
Gwen arrives in literally five minutes. I had to climb out of my window which is on the second story to get out of the house.
"Why didn't you just use the door," Gwen asks.
"Reasons," I reply. Not even my best friend knows about Tim. She just thinks I hate his guts. She doesn't know why.
She shrugs. I sit in passenger seat and wait for Gwen to inform me on the plan, but she doesn't say anything. She drives silently. I try to weasel it out of her, but she doesn't budge.
After what feels like forever, she pulls up into some wig shop. It looks very sketchy. The sign is hanging down and it just looks overall disturbing.
"Gwen!" I shriek. "What are we doing at a wig shop?"
"Reasons," She says mimicking my earlier response. I groan and follow her into the very sketchy looking wig shop.
There are wigs everywhere. They are dangling from the ceiling even. Gwen goes to the back where they have some wigs that look like an old woman would have as hair. Gwen picks one out and places it on her head. Then she walks over to the section that looks like the wigs got cut by kids. She grabs a blonde one and places it on my head. "There" She says. "I am so confused," I tell her.
She doesn't reply to me. She just takes the wig off my head and takes it to the register. She pays for the wigs and tells me to come on. I follow her out to the car.
"I am grandma Bessie and you are her grandchild, Elizabeth." She tells me.
I frown at her. "Gwen, this is so dumb. His mom will know that we are obviously not related to him and besides I look too old to look like I cut my own hair with scissors."
"It's not dumb. Someone needs a little faith, trust, and pixie dust. By someone I mean you. If they ask who we are, I tell them that we are their long lost relatives and we heard about the accident and we wanted to visit our beloved. You, also known as Elizabeth is mentally retarded and cuts her own hair because she has a fear of salons." Gwen tells me. I shake my head at her.
"Whatever. Just put your wig on. It will work, I promise." I put my wig on and sigh. This is not going to work.
I give Gwen the directions to the hospital where Jace is. It only takes five minutes to get there.
Gwen drops me off in the front so she can go look for parking. I wait for her in front of the building. It takes her about ten minutes to find parking. When I finally see Gwen I choke on my own spit. She looks like one of those grandmas that is young and tries to be cool. Although she doesn't look anything like a grandma.
"Come on, let's go see your babe, or cousin in this case." Gwen says.
"Gwen, that's not funny. Incest is gross," I tell her.
"It's not technically incest. You aren't really his cousin and you haven't kissed him, have you?"
"No." I say.
"Oh-Kay." She responds.
When we reach the front desk Gwen handles the woman behind it.
"Hello, Sweetums. Is there a person by the lovely name of Jace here?"
"Last name," The woman responds.
"Uh I don't know. I have dementia. Besides it's not like Jace is a very common name so you should be able to tell me what room he's in."
The woman sighs, "Ma'am, we can't tell you a room number just based on the first name."
Gwen and the woman go back in forth for quite awhile. At some point I check out of the conversation.
"Earth to Arden." Gwen snaps me back into reality.
"Uh yeah?"
"Let's go," She says.
I can't help but feel a little disappointed that we didn't get to see him. I mean, what did I expect though?
When we get to the car I see someone that looks very familiar.
He turns around and then I see him.
"Jace?" I ask.
