I lie outside, the others must of been out late because I can still smell smoke. I think of everything that could've and should've happened. How will everyone react when she's not back at tea today? I think and think, wonder and ponder, until I see it; or her I should say.
I see Adelaide, but it wasn't Adelaide, she was almost clear. She had Adelaide's eyes, hair, everything about her was like Adelaide. She was coming to me. Something glimmered in her hands. Something glimmering in my gars. The ghost made its way until it was just yards from me. Then she called out to me, "Emerson, we never finished the picnic."
"No, I suppose we didn't." I say carefully. I concentrate on her every step as she gracefully sweeps toward me. She almost floats as we sit. She hands me a glass and fills it with the sweet lemonade. As I sip, I slowly start feel shivers go through my spine. It starts to quicken. My bones feel like lightning. My nerves seem to be drag racing in my body, too fast to turn. I fall to my hands and knees shaking.
"What have you done?" I beg to Adelaide.
"You drank lemonade made from cave water. You are as good as dead. You have maybe an hour before you join me. You will be dead and we can leave this earth. Finally unleashed; able to go to the heaven. You will end our misery tonight. The final death."
"I will never go to the cave. You can't make me. I'll die here and you can rot with me on Earth."
"You will do my bidding. You killed me and drank cave water, you have no choice."
I feel my brain start to shut down. "I will do your bidding." I say. Un-willingly I follow her. I have lost control of my body. I must obey her every wish.
We enter the cave. Her blood still covers the walls and the foul scent of rotting flesh is everywhere. I am lead to the rock that the ghosts had been gathered around on the night that Adelaide died. I see a scripture. Telling of the night when the ghosts around me died. A horrible night that no one survived. It tells that no one can pass until 500 are waiting to pass and the fullest moon is out. How the cave is the only place where they won't be put through more hell than the time in which they lived.
I feel my body shut down. My kidney, my liver, everything shuts down. I feel my heart explode inside my chest from the pressure that was put upon it. I lift my my body, now only a soul.
