Scroll 5: The First Day of Class

Red then stopped and Terson said. “Do you already have textbooks for our classes?”

“I don’t need any textbooks. Is it okay not to have one?” Red asked.

“Well, it is okay not to have a textbook. We just buy those for study reference. If you don’t need one, nothing’s wrong, by the way, at eleven o’clock, let’s meet in the school’s garden where the Tree of Magic was situated. Go!” Terson advised.

So Red then hurried in walking bringing with her, the things she needs for the classes she’s going to attend. Red hastily walked to the botanical gardens which are on the school’s east promenade. As Red finally arrived in the botanical gardens, she immediately looked for the exact garden that was described in the orientation for alchemy class. It was said that in the botanical garden, a place where daturas grow is the exact destination for alchemy class. When Red found the place, she immediately went inside the garden and got herself associated with new students. As the class’s professor finally came, the professor greeted the students.

“Good morning class! I am Professor Reeds, and I’ll be teaching you Alchemy Herbiology.”

The students including Red sat on their respective seats and the class for Herbiology finally began. The professor said,

“What is Alchemy Herbiology? Could anyone answer me? I’ll give points.”

A student raised his hand and he answered, “Alchemy Herbiology is the study of herbs.”

“Your answer is close to its right definition, but I can’t consider it correct. You may sit down.” As the professor notices Red, she suddenly remembered that she was the girl who cured the principal of the alchemy division so she called her. “Um, Ms. Red…”

“Yes, Professor Reeds?” Red stood.

“What is Alchemy Herbiology?” asked the professor again.

“Alchemy Herbiology is the study of certain charmed and non-charmed plants, herbs and any living creature that is identical to plants.” Red answered the question.

Red’s classmates and Professor Reeds in alchemy clapped for her. And Red sat on her chair as the professor signaled her and waited for the teacher’s instructions. Professor Reeds then said,

“Okay, our topic for this class is all about basic plants used in alchemy. Plants that are used in alchemy can be classified into three; annual plants, biennial plants and perennial plants.” The professor then walked around the students to help them hear her properly.

“If annual plants are added to certain kind of potion, it strengthens the drinker of the concoction. If biennial plants are added to a concoction mixture, it multiplies things depending on the situation. But, in some cases, if night blooming flowers are added to the mixture with a biennial plant, it could turn the drinker invisible.”

The professor then went back to the teacher’s table and she continued discussing. “Lastly, if perennial plants are used, it weakens the drinker and sometimes kills the drinker himself. Perennial plants are added to poisons, and the creation of such dangerous tonics is prohibited in the school’s premises. So let’s not conduct a regular class today since it’s still your first day of school. But, I have an assignment for you; make a potion that has a visible active ingredient using annual and biennial plants only. The student who makes a potion with best results also gets the best grades.”

The professor then stood and wrote something in the board. As Professor Reeds finished writing on the board, the professor then sat back on her chair and said to the students. “Do you know what I have written on the board?”
