So since I was getting drafted. I thought it would be a good idea to tell my family that they wouldn't be seeing me for a while. Of course they hoped that it wasn't the army, but they knew it was. My uncle was proud of me for doing this. His motto was, " A man's word is how he makes his honor," but I guess by keeping his word I suppose. My orders were to report to Pine Bluff Arsenal which was about three and a half hours away from me. So I was gone that day around twelve o'clock. The drive was quiet, but I enjoyed the peace and quiet because from what my brother wrote I was not going to be getting very much more of it.
I arrived at the base about three thirty-six which was in fact a little over three and a half hours which was good. I reported to the commanding officer. He said, "Son did you say your goodbyes?"

I said, "Yes sir."

He said, "Good, I can't promise you will be coming back. Report to the barracks for placement for the night. The plane leaves at zero six hundred."

" I respected his command and said, "Yes sir". I wondered what type of plane we would be leaving in, but I would know soon enough. It turned out to be a huge jumbo jet.
