There was once a little girl, she was an odd sight in her drab grey dress with buttons all the way up to her throat and her shiny black shoes. The only lively thing about the girl was her flowing blonde hair. The ringlet curls stretched down her back and could never be tamed.
This little girl was sitting in the garden, practicing her studies and making sure not to appear as if she were enjoying herself. If she did, then the monsters would come back.
The little girl noticed something out of the corner of her eye. It was a butterfly, perching delicately on a leaf.
The girl had never seen anything like it and was taken aback by the beauty. The contrast of the blue wing against the monotonous dull grey that dominated the town was startling.
The beauty of the butterfly was so great that the girl began to weep, for she knew it couldn't last. Suddenly, the girl had an idea. She went to the kitchen, very careful not to disturb the monster. She found a container that would be perfect.
The butterfly was still resting when the girl returned. In a quick movement, the girl captured her new friend in the container. The butterfly did not struggle, but the girl noticed a certain sadness about it. Bugs can't be sad, She thought.
She crept into the house and up the stairs, fearing she would be noticed by the monsters. When she got to her room, she carefully placed the butterfly next to the window. The butterfly added a beauty to the plain room, decorated in greys.
A day went by and the girl would frequently check on the insect. She would stare at the butterfly and take in its beauty. She took satisfaction in the fact that no one else could enjoy this like she could.
The next day was not sunny and it was not stormy. It was plain and grey like everything else. The girl ran up to her room, anticipating seeing her butterfly.
When she got to the windowsill she noticed that the big was not moving. It laid there, cold and still. The girl wept as she realized her pet was dead.
The girl trembled in fear when she noticed the monster standing at her doorway. In a haunting voice it said, "This is what happens when you are selfish. You tried to keep the beauty all to yourself and you now it is gone. By taking away the bug's freedom, you took away its will to live and now you must deal with the consequences."
The girl wept and wept because she knew the monster was right.
