A Rude Awakening

January 2, 2015

I sat there, letting the music drown out my thoughts, like a river stone. The lyrics flooded my mind, absorbing my soul daring me to go deeper into space. I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone.

I turned up the volume on my mom's old music player that she gave me the night before she died. I tried to imagine what it must be like to not be afraid of living. I sat on my bed for what felt like hours before my roommate, Samantha walked in.

"Hey, knucklehead! You missed dinner!" She giggled and sat next to me on my bed. I raised an eyebrow. "What happened to perfect symmetry?" I asked jokingly and stared at her bed on the other side of the room.

She has a problem. When you first arrive at the "Lyle Orphanage," you get assigned a roommate and they take you to your room.  The room is plain white and completely symmetrical to the other side. The beds are one foot away from the wall in the corner, the dresser is three feet to the right of your bed with a white lamp on top. We even have two bathrooms. You can decorate your room any way you want, but Samantha never wanted to. She liked being plain, and she admitted to it more than once.

Her side of the room is neat and organized, with her clothes tucked neatly into the drawer, the closet arranged by color. If someone were to walk in here and see our room, they would think I don't have a roommate yet, because it looks exactly the same as the day you arrive.

My side, on the other hand, is decorated with posters of My Chemical Romance, Pierce The Veil, Bring Me The Horizon, All Time Low, Sleeping With sirens, Panic! At The Disco, Black Veil Brides, and Fall Out Boy. Every square inch of my wall is covered in posters. My black clothes stick out of my drawer, leaving the "I don't give a shit" vibe.

I looked up after realizing Samantha didn't respond. I unplugged my earbuds and gave her a reassuring smile. "What's wrong?" I asked.

"Don't you miss them?" She asked. "Miss who?" It was only after I said it I realized what she was talking about. "I miss them every day." I said sadly. My parents died in a plane crash when I was 11. I was on the plane with them, and I was one of the few people who survived. I have burn marks all over my lower back, but I'm okay.

Samantha opened her mouth to talk, but then Mrs. Grady opened the door. "Girls, come downstairs. People are here to find a child." I walked out the door with Samantha.

"Alex!" Mrs. Grady shrieked. "Change your shirt! People don't want a depressed child!" I looked down at my MCR shirt. There's nothing wrong with it. Samantha walked into the room and tossed me a One Direction shirt. "Seriously, Sam?" I asked. "What, they're amazing!" I rolled my eyes and went downstairs.

There was a large group of people wanting to adopt, which doesn't happen very often. A kind looking couple smiled and asked to talk to Samantha. "I don't know," Sam started. I pushed her towards them. "Go!" She let out a bubbly giggle. I know they want to adopt her.  I smiled, happy for her.

I was about to leave when someone tapped my shoulder. I spun around, slightly alarmed. I saw Louis Tomilson, I think his name is. Sam always talked about him.

"I couldn't help but notice what a wonderful shirt you're wearing." I looked down at Sam's 1D shirt. "No, you don't understand, this is my" he cut me off. "Do you want to get adopted?" He asked. "Well y-yeah... But" I started. Mrs. Grady walked by, and the guy stopped her. "I think I want to adopt her!"

He signed some paper work. "You don't understand! I-" "Don't worry, look!" He pointed to Samantha and the happy couple. "She's getting adopted, too. She won't be alone."

I stopped talking. Maybe if I let him believe I listened to 1D, I could finally escape this place.

It's what I've always wanted.
