Chapter Twenty Three

Start from the beginning

“Can’t argue with you there,” he nodded considerately to Gage’s words, “but just because you know what I am doesn’t mean you know how I think.”

“I’ve watched the misery you’ve caused by your actions and lack thereof for thousands of years. So no, I don’t know what you’re thinking but I could take a pretty damn good guess.”

“Then guess,” He raised a palm innocently, “and I will tell you how you are wrong.”

His instinct was to walk up to him, to get right in his face, but with Sera behind him Gage wasn’t going to move an inch. And at that thought he took another step to the right, now she was protected from between his wings. With the wall behind her of this…bedroom, he had her covered.

A bedroom? In purgatory? Had they upgraded since the last time he was here? He couldn’t tell. There were no windows in the grey stone walls, and all he could see through the doorway was more of the rough wood floor already beneath his feet. This wasn’t earth either though. No way would He dare step a foot in the mortal realm.

He let that go at God’s raised eyebrow. He wanted to play, then Gage would play.

“My guess is this all just a big fuck you to me for all the shit I’ve caused you.”

He nodded appreciatively, pursing his lips in consideration before looking back to Gage, “it would be a great form of retribution, you are right in that, but that’s not what this is.”

“Then what is it? Why else would you take Sera from me if it wasn’t to hurt me?” Gage growled through the pain, it was better than crying in front of the bastard. Though considering that Gage hadn’t had sight till now he didn’t know how long God had been standing in the doorway. For all he knew he may have already seen just that.

“If matters had gone the way I had planned then you would have never known her at all so you cannot fault me in that. You are already well aware of that guilty party.”

Guilty was hardly the word he would use for Josephine, more like grateful.

“So then you didn’t plan that fire, didn’t have your angels waiting in the wings to steal her from earth?” Gage accused God.

“No,” he shook his head and smiled, “I planned every moment of that.”

Gage’s fist was flying before he knew it, before either of them knew it. So much for all seeing, he definitely didn’t see Gage’s fist as it cracked his jaw and sent his head snapping back. But unlike the last time the two of them found themselves in this situation there was no one to hold Gage back and he managed to get in a second shot.

   Damn but that felt good.

But that did surprise him as God went down in a flurry of robes, stunned Gage enough that he was still standing there when God leapt up to retaliate. With another crack-of lightning- Gage was sent flying into the wall behind him. He crashed into it, taking the pictures and art down with him as he slid to the floor. Tiny flashes of light danced in front of his eyes there for a second before his sight was filled with a much more soothing vision.

“Gage, are you okay?” Sera asked as she ran frantic hands over him.

He looked past her to God’s self-satisfied expression.

“Yup…yup I’m good,” he grunted as he pushed himself off the floor.

No way was he going to admit how much that had thrown him off with God standing there like that. Of course grabbing his head and trying to shake off the dizzies was probably a good enough sign for God that he got him good. But it’s not like it was a fair fight, Gage only had fists, he had lightning.
