Chapter Twenty Three

Start from the beginning

She came down awkwardly, kissing his chin first before her lips found his. He thought to frown but as she began to move her mouth against his nothing else mattered. He was lost to her and he threw the blanket from his body as he moved his other hand to her waist to hold her tightly against him, rolling them both to their sides. He shivered in delight feeling no obstruction between his skin and hers, she was naked. Surprisingly there was no reaction between his legs, just in his heart to have been given this chance to be so close to her.

   Oh how could he forget.

He pressed his forehead against hers breaking the kiss, pulling his head back into the pillow just enough to speak. She’d be looking down on him right about now, and he wished he could’ve seen her face, her reaction to his next words. But he was the fool to have kept that to himself while she was alive now wasn’t he?

“I love you,” he whispered to her. It wouldn’t make up for his negligence, but still it brought him some sense of peace to know the sentiment was now out there in the universe.

He wasn’t surprised that he received no answer. Deceit probably figured it wasn’t necessary considering she didn’t understand the significance of the emotion. And like his brethren neither had he, at least not until Sera.

Instead she pulled away from him, “what?” she murmured, “What did you just say?”

No, this was where he would wake right? Just in time for him to see Lucifer’s reaction to Gage at his most vulnerable.

   Fuck it and fuck him.

“I love you Sera,” he said earnestly as he reached for her, finding an arm and following it till he found her hand. It was pressed to her face, and as Gage traced her fingers with his he could feel the wetness pooling there.

“You’re crying,” it wasn’t the question, “why?” was the question.

Again no answer, at least not verbally... No his answer came in the form of unsure hands searching his face and then her lips pressed to his again. He wasn’t going to complain, but the longer this lasted the more unsure he became as to when the end of the fantasy would come.

“I love you too,” she mumbled against his lips, barely breaking the kiss as if she knew their time was short too.

Words had never in all his immortal years affected him in such a way. They pleased him their meaning- she loved him back-but they hurt him too in their dishonesty. He could not forget it was not Sera’s lips that spoke them.

Too bad his heart and his mind were not on the same page. And it was his heart that took control in that moment. His emotional connection and the need to be as close to her as possible no matter how false it was. He threw his arms around her as he continued to meet her passionate kiss, meaning to roll her beneath him. Because this time his cock reacted, this time he was going to make love to his woman, to bring them as close physically as she had just brought them spiritually. And Sera didn’t protest, only giggled as he made his intentions known.

He didn’t get that far though because no matter how he shifted his wings he couldn’t get them out of his way. It was like they had a mind of their own suddenly and no matter how he moved or batted them away they blocked his attempts to get Sera beneath him.

He cursed and apologized to Sera as the two of them sat there, “I don’t know what’s wrong with them.”

“I wish I could help, but…I can’t see you,” she said ruefully.

Gage stopped fighting with his wings, “what do you mean you can’t see me?”

“I…I don’t know, it’s like my eyes won’t open. There’s nothing there, nothing covering them, but…they won’t open. I’ve been trying since I…woke up I guess.”
