Chapter Twenty Three

“I thought you said he didn’t know what love was,” Sera turned to Death with a frown, “when I told you I loved him.”

“You knew about that too,” Gage threw his hands up in frustration, “why am I the only one who doesn’t know any of this stuff.”

“You know now,” Death shot him a look before turning back to Sera, “he didn’t know what love was, he just knew he felt something strong for you but not the word for it.”

“You said no matter Sera wants though, but you two didn’t know each other yet, in this form,” he was quick to tag on, “so how could you know she wanted to stay on earth? Her life seemed pretty miserable, honestly if things were that rough for me I’d be ready to check out of the mortal plain.”

“That, along with my own limitations as a mortal, were wholly God’s doing,” Josephine muttered to Gage.

That was another surprise, that God had let her keep her memories of her defiance. But it didn’t answer the question even if it did bring up another.

“You weaved that darkness into her mind?” He pointed angrily at God, “the one that she had to fight against, the one that nearly got her killed time and time again didn’t you?”

God was hardly affected by Gage’s resentment, “and what of it? If her mortal life was brought to an end, whether maliciously or accidentally, then she would have come home to me with Josephine fast to follow. Of course she found a way around that now didn’t she,” he grumbled bitterly, “it had a clause on it, it would only affect her till she died.”

Almost before he could raise his hand two sets of bodies separated God and Gage before it could come to blows again. And people wondered why he had hit him the first time around. He never saw the wrong in his actions, as long as his wants were fulfilled then the pain he caused others was negligible.

And as worked up as he was he let Sera push him back. They must have known if it was anyone else he wouldn’t have complied so easily, but for her he would do anything. Running an agitated hand over his face he looked down to her. That certainly helped his demeanor. Seeing her concern had his fury abating and his mind moving on to more constructive thoughts then beheading God.

He crooked up the corner of his lip as he ran his knuckles across her cheek telling her it was okay, that she could let go. She sighed in relief and nodded to him, throwing a look over her shoulder to where Death was berating God once more. And as much as he was enjoying that he still had more questions. Looking to the woma- angel in front of him he figured he’d get the most important out now before things fell apart completely.

“What were you looking for beauty, on earth?” he asked her quietly.

She shook her head at him, her brow pinching before she leaned into his body. She didn’t know, and it bothered her greatly to know she had been robbed of the memories from another lifetime.

Yup, that was God for ya.

“Josephine,” Gage asked over Sera’s head as he held her, “what was she looking for, you must know.”

She glanced towards where Death and God were now shouting at each other. She was nervous, evident by the biting of her lip as she turned to Gage with a sigh, throwing a hand up in defeat, “it was you.”

“What?” he smiled down to Sera through his confusion. Sure that fed Gage’s ego to think an angel, one of God’s Seraphim, would give up heaven for him, but that was impossible. Her kind and his were not allowed to associate.
