“Hand her over Gage,” the Senator straightened his suit coat with a tug of satisfaction, “or neither of you will get out of here alive.”
“Call them off or I could say the same about them.”
“No, this is too perfect,” he shook his head with a malevolent grin, “I’ve saved the best for last, her own faction. And with her here I can see firsthand the horror on her face as she watches them all fall.”
That’s where he was! He was on the campus. He knew this décor seemed familiar. It was the same sort that decorated the Dean’s office. They were in the Dean’s own home. Gage gave a second to wonder if the man was alive…probably not, and really he couldn’t feel bad about that sorry sod.
Finally Sera got with it hearing the Senator’s scornful words. Unfortunately it wasn’t in the passive, “oh protect me Gage” way he had hoped and she began fighting against him.
“No!” she shouted and tried to push around Gage.
For a mortal woman she was hard to keep back too, very squirmy. Gage had to toss his blade back to hell and hold her with two hands to keep her in place.
“Sera don’t,” he warned her.
“No, it’s his fault, it’s his fault she’s dead,” the tears began.
“As a matter of fact my dear,” the Senator began to beam, “it is yours. How do you think we found every member of your society? Because of you.”
“What,” Sera stopped struggling abruptly, “no…”
“Yes child,” he laughed, “every cell phone you’ve ever owned, every laptop you tote around with you, every bag or coat you’ve ever worn near myself or my employees has been bugged and tagged. You showed us where to go, told us who was what, even let us know where to be to stop you. All we had to do was wait for you to come to us.”
So he did, all along the Senator knew Sera had been with Gage. Oh how he hated technology.
“But…but Lizzy…” Sera slumped in Gage’s arms.
He pursed his lips in a thoughtful gesture, “a contingency plan, however thin. Groomed her well didn’t I?”
She could only stare blankly at her Uncle, her eyes filling with tears that she tried to blink away to no avail.
Gage pulled her closely to her again, in comfort this time and not restraint, “beauty I’m…I’m sorry…” he whispered in her ear as he nuzzled against her.
“And that,” the Senator scoffed, “you want to mention conflict of interest…”
Gage snapped an angry gaze at the Senator pulling his blade forth once more after helping Sera carefully into one of the chairs. Jerry came to stand over her, thankfully looking a hell of a lot more solid than he did a moment ago.
“Do what d’u need tu do suh,” he gave him a sharp nod, “I got ‘er.”
Enough was enough and Gage stalked up to the Senator, distinctly aware of the muzzles following his movements.
“I will ask you again, call them off or you will have more blood on your hands then you could wash off in an eternity.”
“Why? My will is being fulfilled as we speak, nothing can stop me from my revenge, not even you.”
Gage gritted his teeth as he took a long deep breath, preparing for a dramatic display as he ripped his wings from his skin. It was going to hurt like a son of a bitch but he could use that pain to fuel his fury.
