Smonova Lumen woke up on Saturday to River Hazel making breakfast. He peeked around the corner of the wall that separated the bedroom and the living room, which lead to the kitchen. It was easy to walk through and see everywhere because there were no doors, just a few walls here and there.

"About time you're up!" River said as she flipped pancakes on the little frying pan on a grate that went across two tables and above a stone fireplace.

River was a fair young Drivvy lady. She had a fit body and a breathtaking Ocean-blue eyes.

Smonova raised his head from his pillow a bit, swiping his long, bright red hair away from his green eyes. He smiled at his girlfriend and laid his head back on the pillow.

"Thank you for making pancakes", he muttered to River in a deep voice.

"Oh no, these are for me", River replied. Smonova's skinny body shot up from the bed. "Are there none for me?" He squeaked.

River giggled. "Maybe you'll get one, if you're lucky", she replied.

Smonova laid himself down in the bed again. "Am I lucky?" He asked.

"Well that remains to be seen", River answered, and put a plate with a pancake down on the bedside table. "Of course you are", she said and kissed Smonova's forehead, her long, blonde hair acting like a curtain around Smonova's face, and went back to the kitchen.

A while later, Smonova got dressed and joined River in the kitchen. She was reading a book at the table.

"Is it interesting?" Smonova asked, looking at the book.

"Oh yes, quite", River replied in an airy tone, not taking her eyes off the pages.

    "What's it about?".

"Oh, you wouldn't care. I know literature isn't really in your interest".

"I can pretend to care and listen, though".

River smirked and looked at Smonova. "You don't have to", she said.

Smonova stepped outside his door to go and pick up the newspaper, when he turned to his left and saw Frida Dailey crying on the doorstep of Sameon Depetal's house, three houses down from his. Smonova decided to go see what the problem was.

"Mrs. Dailey!" He shouted as he ran across the dirt path towards Frida. She looked up.

"What's wrong, mrs. Dailey?" Smonova asked when he got to Sameon's doorstep.

"I'm afraid I'm not a Mrs. anymore", Frida answered and pointed to the fountain, where two doctors were carrying old Dailey's body into a wagon.

"Oh that's just awful", Smonova replied. "My condolences".

"But that's not the only reason I'm crying. I reached out to Sameon Depetal for comfort, and he slammed the door in my face!" Frida wailed through tears.

"You don't have to stand for that! Knock on the door again and tell him he should be ashamed of himself", Smonova said, and added: "He needs a real lesson in manners, that man".

    "Thank you, Smonova. I will".

"Alright. I'll be off then. And once again, my condolences", Smonova said, spun around and started walking towards his house.

When Smonova walked through his door, he was greeted by an embrace and a kiss from River. He answered by wrapping his arms around her and kissing her back.

"You took some time getting the paper", River said.

"I had to stop by Frida Dailey, her husband was killed last night, it seems", Smonova replied.

    "Oh dear, that's awful!"

"It is a shame to lose such a talented baker, yes".

"Well who could've done such a thing?"

"There might be something about it in the paper", Smonova said and opened the newspaper. He flipped through the pages, but found nothing and shook his head.

"Poor Frida Dailey", River sighed. "Must be hell, losing your husband".

Just a moment later, Smonova and River saw Frida run past their window with her face in her hands.
