Now it was Sera’s turn to be confused, “you mean you didn’t know Senator Preston was my Uncle? My mother’s brother?”

“No,” Gage said gravely, “no it…I never ask of family unless they’re under suspicion. Why would relations matter, family trees won’t help investigations any. I…” Gage stopped abruptly and threw a hand in his hair as he began to pace, “I won’t take contracts that involve the revenge murders of family members, I do have some morals.”

Jerry snapped his fingers, startling Sera, “dat’s where dis body knows d’u. It is from de Sen’natah’s office. ‘E was watchin’ d’u, dat’s why ‘e did not like d’u. ‘E knew d’u were up tu no good.”

“Me?” Sera shot around, “I never did anything out of place when I was there. I barely ever spoke a word to Drew.”

“No, but ‘e knew d’u were out tu take de Sen’natah down.”

   “How?”

It was Jerry’s turn to look grim, “de...de Sen’natah was de one ‘oo told ‘im.”

“You knew this all along?” Gage shouted, “And you didn’t think to tell me?”

“No,” Jerry held up his hands and backed away from Gage and his fury, “no, not me, dis body, dis mind did. I am truly sorry suh, had I’d of known-”

With a deep breath Gage shook his head, one hand gripping at his temples, “it’s not your fault,” he sighed, “I just…I don’t understand why he would call on me if he already had an idea of who was behind this all.”

“I do,” Jerry grimaced again, “because de Sen’natah did not t’ink she could lead de Angels. He t’ought ‘er just a spy and easy tu re’move if need be.”

Sera paled knowing that whole time she was in her Uncle’s office she was one wrong move away from being taken out.

“Why now?” Death chimed, “why are you just telling us all this now, Jerry?”

“Because I did not know till jus’ now, I do not stray into de memories of my hosts; it makes me crazy tu see t’eir lives. But when she men’toned ‘er Uncle…den I unda’stood.”

“I’m going to kill him,” Gage muttered, “that’s the soul that’s going to take your place,” he pointed at Sera, “and he deserves it far more than you.”

“But…Gage, won’t that be like….against your contract. Aren’t supposed to be helping my Uncle, not killing him?”

“Fuck it,” he threw a hand in the air, “I’ve protected some shits in my life, but a man who would kill his own niece…no, I won’t stand for that.”

“And your boss, the deity you work for, he’s the one who set this up initially right? So don’t you think he’s going to be a little pissed that you killed the person you’re supposed to be protecting?”

Sera didn’t like that she was in essence trying to save her Uncle’s life. But she was afraid Gage was letting his personal feelings get in the way of a matter that might cost him his life. So what if he was immortal. Sera was pretty sure a god could easily remedy that.

   “Fuck Lucifer too.”

Sera gasped, “Lucifer?” she said slowly, that was not the deity she was excepting, “you…you work for Lucifer? But…then that would mean you live in…”

“Hell,” Gage finished flatly for her, “so that makes me an expert in who belongs there and who doesn’t.”

“Gage…” she couldn’t help but back away from him.
