Chapter 27: So Near...Yet it Ends

Start from the beginning

“yeah…I know what you mean” Sophia bent forward

Shadow…Shadow…hey wake up” Shadow didn’t move “Shadow…wakey, wakey” no response “no good he’s in dream land” turned round and grabbed his feet  “well…I’ll take mister steamy to Ariana. He’ll wake her up” Shadow’s eyes flickered open and he winked to Luxe before feigning his blank state making Luxe giggle “what’s so funny?” said Sophia turning to her

nothing, nothing” she said covering her mouth

well…if you say so” she began dragging Shadow out the room “come on you” Luxe watched him go out “let’s see if Ariana will wake you up” she then saw his hand make a thumb’s up making her giggle once again

His feeling was genuine but…he laid it on a bit longer than necessary” said Luxe smiling “He just wanted to make Sophia smile. What we wouldn’t do without him”

It was a few moments later with Shadow on a bed while Ariana tried to wake him up “no good Sophia. He’s out cold” she smiled

I am definitely going to have to do that again. Well…I’m going to check on Julia and Kimbra. You…do what you can wake him up” as Shadow blinked and whispered

is she gone?” Ariana nodded “nice” he sat up straight “oww…I’ve got carpet burns from being dragged”

“that’s your fault for faking”

“I…wasn’t actually faking” said Shadow rubbing his head “I just…carried it on a bit longer than necessary. Anyway have you pack the bag?”

“Yeah…it’s here” pointing to a large blue back-pack “hey Shadow…can I…ask you something?”

“yeah go ahead”

“What would you do if…your dark half was still around?” Shadow tilted his head “look I know he was a jerk but…he was trying to survive like us”

“I…don’t know. I’d just probably…let him…get on with his life” he stood up and strapped on the pack “he chose his way of living so…we just let him. you can’t help people who don’t want to be saved”

“yeah I guess so. I mean…we all tried but…we just couldn’t anything”

“hey…you saved me so I’m grateful” he rubbed her head “little sis” she couldn’t help but smile

Shadow, Ariana!” called Sophia “we’re ready to go”

“Come on big bro” said Ariana taking his arm “otherwise we’ll be left behind” with a nod they headed to the foyer.

All six of them gathered in the foyer. All had lingering thoughts, feelings and memories of their time in this place they considered a home. With backward glances they all waved the hotel goodbye and set off in the direction of the silver light in the sky. It was a rather straightforward trip that spanned the day. Once they left the city they came to a dirt road in-between two dead fields. They stopped a few times but continued at a nice and somewhat peaceful pace. Eventually as they went to the top of the hill they saw the bridge in the distance. Julia was the first to speak “guys, look it’s the ocean…it’s really the ocean”

“that’s one sight I thought I’d never see” said Shadow looking at it “and it looks like our final destination…is an island” what they saw was a large ruined city on the water connected to the main land only via a long bridge. The island was surrounded entirely by sea
