“I’m feeling lonely so I tried to make you, well, be here, but I guess this will do for now. Maybe I’ll see you in a minute.”
There was a long beat of silence on the other end before Chels responded, “Sera, hunny, are you…are you high or something?”
“Probably,” Sera said nonchalantly. Because really, if she was in an ICU on life support then one would think there were a few drugs pumping through your system.
“What?” Chels shouted, “what do you mean probably, where the hell are you?”
“Um…” Sera strolled back over to the window, “in an apartment somewhere near Nelson Park I’d say, I can see the hotel from here.”
“Which hotel, your parent’s? Or the one that Lacy is beating the door down on as we speak?”
Ah, so that was the reason for the Chels intervention in this world, to remind Sera of her responsibilities. She was good at that, taking care of Sera and making sure she was where she needed to be. But…until the doctors fixed whatever was wrong with her it didn’t really matter.
Maybe this coma business wasn’t so bad. It was the first time Sera had felt this good in…ever. Without her darkness, without all those responsibilities hanging over her head Sera felt positively free.
“My parent’s duh? You think I’d have a view like this at that crappy motel?”
“Sera,” Chels was exasperated, “what view?”
“The one I’m looking at…” Sera shook her head, “guess you can’t see it can you,” she giggled, ooo a giggle, now that felt good, “hey, why don’t you bring Joey with you when you come,” it had been a while since she saw her sister, and who knew if she was ever going to actually wake up to see her again.
“Come where Sera, where are you?”
“I just told you.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Well it’s not like you don’t already know.”
This Chels was in her head after all, so she knew everything that Sera did.
“Oh my god Sera,” imaginary Chels grumbled into the phone with a somewhat controlled frustration, “you’re not making any sense.”
“Yeah,” Sera sighed and ran the sheer panel of the curtain through her fingers, “that seems to be the theme right now.”
“A...wha…” there was some rustling on the other end of the line like Chels was looking for something, “no…” she mumbled after a moment, “no artificial colors in the food I sent with you, Sera did you eat something or…or touch something you shouldn’t? Is that what’s wrong? Did you have an allergy attack? You do have your EpiPens with you right? Please tell me you have them,” she fired off without pausing for an answer, “please tell me this is just the medication talking.”
“Chels relax, I’m fine really,” Sera tried to placate her, even if her attention was now on the closet door she could see opened just a crack… “Yes I had an allergy attack, yes I had my EpiPens and yes it stopped the reaction in me. But no this isn’t the medication talking because that all happened before I got shot.”
“WHAT!?!”
“It’s okay Chels,” Sera peeked inside the wardrobe, how curious. The racks were full of suits, men’s suits…“someone found me and brought me to the hospital. I’m sure you’ll find me soon enough.”
