The way Jerry figured it- Gage having discussed this in depth with the former Voodoo priest- Lucifer could very well help Gage no matter which way it went. If God did take away Gage’s immortality and give him a soul then Gage could simply sell it to Lucifer for his immortality back. Sure it came with an eternity of servitude but Gage, like Jerry, was already serving Lucifer indefinitely anyway. And if he didn’t get a shiny new soul to ruin then there were other options…like eating other’s souls to keep his immortality. And if it meant having to fork over and feed a few condemned souls every hundred years or so to Gage to keep one of his favorite killers going, Jerry figured Lucifer would be willing to pay that price. Not that he was too crazy about being nothing more than human, but considering the souls no longer existed once consumed, Gage figured he’d be passing on that one.
Of course many other things were discussed with Jerry- in between his curse laden tirades over the bind Gage had gotten them in- all revolving around Sera to the demon’s irritation. He confirmed for Gage that she wasn’t possessed by any kind of demon, just a troubled soul as it was. She didn’t carry with her any kind of curse that he could outwardly see, and again, thanks to his previous profession he could see just such a thing. He said that a touch would confirm it for him but he trusted his eyes. He also told Gage he should just off her now and deal with the shit as it came. Because in a few short hours-twelve midnight to be exact- they were due in front of Lucifer for a progress report, and he’d rather they both get screwed by God for fucking up then Lucifer.
Not to mention Jerry wasn’t too pleased about having to reschedule his entire weekend around Sera to begin with. He wasn’t trying to get in her pants after all so why should he care? Though truthfully Gage knew that wasn’t the reason he pursued her, not anymore and not for a while. If it had he wouldn’t have had any reservations about acting when the opportunity was presented to him on the train. And oh what a tempting offer it was. But she was ill, it…it wouldn’t have been right.
Gage scoffed to himself, look at who was turning all moral and right now.
But he was right, Jerry was just as right as Death had been. Gage needed to just get it done and over with. If he killed her it could be quick and painless, what lay in store for Gage with God afterwards he didn’t know…which was much better then what he knew would be laying in wait for him with Lucifer, namely Gage himself, as in laid out cheeks spread…but letting Sera suffer because he was afraid of his own punishment was just pathetic.
When he was sure the woman’s, Mama, weak human eyes lost sight of Sera in the darkness she sighed, shaking her head and looking up into the night. Though Gage could more than identify with that sentiment he thought her reason for looking to the starless night a wasted effort. Praying, he mocked her to himself…orrr maybe not.
Jeeze, he was really getting sick of this second guessing of himself.
If she was praying for Sera’s protection then it would certainly be answered since Gage had that whole thing covered.
He felt compelled to acknowledge her, to acknowledge her request and he gave her a nod that she couldn’t see even if he was directly in her line of sight. No he was going for stealth tonight and with his wings out he was invisible to all mortals. Still…it left him wondering how God did it, how he ignored every plea for help he received.
With that he straightened out and stepped off the roof of the building with a mighty beat of his wings, taking off into the night once again. He had to admit it felt good, he hadn’t been out for a flight since he got to Kelowna. It was the first thing he did when he got to earth of course, hell’s cramped quarters not being very conducive to flying and all, but he hadn’t had the opportunity since.
