Oak Street was usually a quiet and decent street, but on Halloween, it was the exact opposite. The streets were busy with bursts of laughter. Many children were dressed up in Halloween costumes, and they were trick-or-treating nonstop.
“Could you take our dog for a walk?” the mom asked.
“Okay,” Nadia agreed. Nadia put Buster on a leash and walked him until she stumbled upon a beautiful necklace. It had a ruby pendant and a chain made of gold. The necklace was the most precious thing Nadia had ever laid eyes on. She picked up the necklace and placed it around her neck. Suddenly, a strange feeling consumed her. It was a feeling of power and loftiness, the best feeling she ever had.
Nadia walked Buster home, and when she was about to enter the driveway, her neighbor showed up. He was not a friendly person and bullied Nadia a lot.
“Hey loser, what’s up with the dumb necklace?” he said. She was going to call him a jerk, but something else happened instead. Nadia started speaking a foreign language that hypnotized the bully, and the necklace glowed bright red. The bully’s eyes turned red and he obeyed Nadia. He started punching himself and after two minutes, he lay on the floor bloody from head to toe. Nadia returned to her normal self and the necklace stopped glowing. She looked down and saw the dead bully. Nadia burst into tears and, at the same moment, there was a flash of light and a deafening noise. Two ghosts had appeared.
Everything was happening at once. The ghosts looked at Nadia, saw that she was wearing the necklace, and started toward her. She was crawling backward in an attempt to escape the strangers.
“Hand over the necklace, little girl; we wouldn’t want this to get rough,” said the ghost-woman in a persuading voice.
“Who are you?” asked Nadia fearfully.
“We are the servants of the Queen of the Underworld and we have come to get her necklace,” stated the ghost-man, pointing to the necklace.
“I will never give the necklace to you!” shouted Nadia. The woman and the man started speaking the same foreign language, but it had a different effect. Trees, pumpkins, plants, and other things sprouted legs, arms, and mouths with vicious teeth, walked toward Nadia, and attacked mercilessly. Nadia tried to hypnotize the plants, so she filled with anger, and soon was speaking the foreign language. Abruptly, the objects turned toward the ghosts and destroyed them, then disappeared.
She knew she had to get rid of the necklace once and for all. She found a shovel, dug a deep hole in her backyard, and buried the necklace. Afterward, Nadia went inside her house and fell asleep.
“The necklace is gone,” Nadia whispered in her sleep. Indeed, you may presume nobody would want to dig up the necklace. But let me ask you to think about this question, is anything really gone?
