The bell above the door rings as I step into the crowded Cafe. An old woman sitting at a table by herself turns to stare at me, I smile but she takes no notice and turns back to her coffee. "Alright then.." I murmur and step into the queue at the counter, The man at the counter glances at me his cold blue eyes pierce into me, I shiver and stare down at the ground. I could practically hear his humour from where I was standing, I haven't slept and the smell of coffee in here is making me feel slightly nauseous. "next please" his melodic voice breaks me out of my trance, I step forward and he smiles softly "What can I get you?" Now that I'm closer I can see how handsome he is, straight away something inside me clicks, I can feel him searching my mind, poking at my memories and searching for my thoughts. I put up the wall in my mind and his facial expression changes from kindness to confusion. "Hello Mr Fairbrook, I'll have a coffee, black and to go please" He shakes his head and smiles "Of course detective" He starts pressing buttons on the machine and places a cup under the nozzle, I can see his eyes darting around the room, His expression is still one of confusion. I smile softly as he hands the cup to me " Three Dollars" He stares at me, still trying to read my mind, I throw a five onto the counter "Keep the change" I smile and turn away, I hear him laugh as I walk out the door.
I arrive at the office, coffee in hand. As I walk through the smaller offices, most of the men in there smile and nod their greetings but the others ignore me, They envy me and my higher position, my relationship with the Chief doesn't help the situation either. I step into my office and sigh, the paperwork is piled around my desk, practically up to my waist, most of that paperwork are likely complaints from citizens about my work. I sit down in my chair, I swing around in it for a few minutes "Weeee.." I stop and sigh once more, The door opens and the Chief walks in "I knew I should have gotten you a normal chair Claire" He smiles and closes the door, I know what he's thinking, I remind him of his daughter Kim, She was killed by a demon five years ago, I'll never forget it. "What's up boss?" He checks his phone and looks at me "Well, nothing new, Xander Fairbrook is-" I cut him off "Causing trouble again?" He nods and shrugs at me, "You normally handle him so I left it for you, He was caught vandalising the library.." He pauses and waits for my reply but I just stare at him instead "Listen Claire..don't go too hard on him, Mr Fairbrook is mayor and we don't want him down on us" He sighs and rubs his temples, "Sure" I stand up and pat his shoulder as I walk past "Take something for those headaches Marc"
As I park the car across from the library I can already see Xander sitting on the curb outside it, I sigh and open the car door "Hey! Troublemaker!" I shout at him from across the street, His head jerks up and he looks at me, He takes out his earphones and smiles "Detective, well well well..We meet again" I step out of the car and lock the door, I jog across the street towards him and shake my head at him as I reach him "Xander.." He puts his hand up to stop me "In my defence, I was just practising my graffiti skills Claire" He smiles sheepishly, his green eyes sparkle with mystery as he runs a hand through his pitch black hair. I sigh as he stands up and holds his wrists out "Not too tight this time Claire, don't want to explain your fetishes to my Father" I laugh and shake my head "Just driving you home, You're the older one here Xander, You should start acting like it" He places a hand on his heart and pulls a hurt expression, he flips his hair out of his face "Ouch Claire, That one hurt my ego" I start walking over to the car "Yeah, you have plenty of that" He strides forward and skips over to the car "Oh damn, good one" I open the car and slide into the driver seat, he climbs in next to me and scoffs "Jesus Claire, Could have cleaned in here before you asked me on a date" I start the car and sigh "Shut up Xander before I pop you" I look over at him and he smiles "You already popped my cherry babe" I roll my eyes and drive towards the mansion overlooking the town.
The large metal gates slide backwards as we drive towards them, I always thought this place was so intimidating. It overlooks the whole town, I felt like they could see my every move without even leaving their house, As I drive in, the mansion looms over the car, The front door opens "Great.." Xander whispers under his breath as his father steps outside. I turn off the car and get out, "Evening Miss Russell" He walks over to me and extends his hand to me, I shake it and stare into his eyes "Quite a pleasant one Mr Fairbrook" His wrinkles frame his handsome features, his blue eyes have too much wisdom in them, wisdom and something else that I can never make out. Xander tries to sneak past him but he grabs him by the arm and looks sternly into his eyes, It's as if he's speaking to him through his eyes, Xander shrinks back away from his Father and briefly nods at me before hurrying inside. "I'd like to apologise about my son, He's been acting out a lot lately, you'd think at his age he'd be mature" He shakes his head, I can see how tired he looks as he rubs his face softly "It's all good Mr Fairbrook" I smile and he imitates my smile "Please..Call me Lawrence" He looks into my eyes "Yes..sir..I mean Lawrence" I stutter and turn red with embarrassment and he nods softly "I must get back to the office, good to see you Lawrence" I smile softly and climb back into the car, He waves as I drive off and I could have sworn I seen his eyes turn black.
