As I sit here in my room, I think back on the past year. It is May 2013. I know that everything happens for a reason and I always try to accept that. Sometimes it is so hard though. Like when my brother’s girlfriend passed away last year. Everyone was so shocked and upset. I couldn’t stop crying for days. Even now when I think back to her, she was so beautiful and full of life. For days I kept asking why? I could never imagine the pain that her family was feeling. But it must have happened for a reason.  Brodie was so strong and he did so much for everyone else during that time that I don’t think he dealt with her death himself. That would be, in my thoughts, the reason why he had gone and joined the army.

Like I said before, everything happens for a reason and so when I heard that my brother was back from his tour in Afghanistan and in hospital it was for a reason. He was still alive thank gosh. And this is where my story begins, with me going to visit Brodie at the hospital.

“Ah, Miss, you must be Brodie’s sister that he won’t shut up about”

When I walked out of the elevator and into the hall of floor 3 at St Luke’s (the local hospital) that was what I was greeted with. As I turned around I saw an older looking man who I presumed is Brodie’s doctor. I’m sure the guy has his work cut out for him is my brother is his patient.

“Hi, my name is Callie and yeah, I’m Brodie’s one and only sister. I’m so sorry if he is causing trouble. I know what he’s like and he is not hospital friendly.” I shot out an apology quickly. I know how Brodie hates being couped up in a room for weeks.

“Nice to meet you Callie, I’m Dr Davey and your brother isn’t causing that many problems. Actually he is doing okay, considering his injuries. Brodie is behaving himself, I mean apart from the endless flirting and, what he calls, sweet talking the nurses. You have nothing to worry about. He will also making a full recovery, although it will take a few months and he will need lots of Physical Therapy to get all the movement back in his left side.” Dr Davey said.

“Well considering the things he’s seen and done, I guess that’s the best thing we can hope for.” I left Dr Davey to go to Brodie’s room. As I approached the door I heard talking coming from inside, so being the eavesdropper I am, I waited and listened.

“But babe, I’m really cold. If you lie next to me I’ll warm up quicker than an extra blanket.” Yep, Brodie hadn’t changed much at all. “Actually they told us in the Army that body to body contact works best…so you should take off your clothes first.”

“Is that a fact, Mr Hanson?” I’m assuming that’s the nurse he’s chatting up.

I could hear the smirk in his voice as he continued to try and persuade the nurse to get into bed with him “I promise you I wouldn’t lie about something as important as my immediate health.” I felt the need to step in and rescue the poor nurse that is being practically harassed by her patient. So me being me ran into the room, jumped on his bed and yelled…

“OOOODIE!!!” Yep, I call him ‘Odie’ because when I was little I couldn’t pronounce the ‘Br’ and I’ve called him that ever since I found out it annoys him. I only call him Brodie when I am truly angry with him.

After clearing her throat the nurse awkwardly stammered out “Well, err, I’ll just, umm, leave you to it. Bye”

“Wait, Sweetheart, you don’t have to leave! This is just my sister.” Brodie tried to coax her back in but she was already gone. “Oh my gosh you’re an absolute pain, you know that right?” Brodie groaned at me.

“I missed you so much Odie! I know this wasn’t exactly the way I wanted you to come home, and hey as soon as your all better I’m gonna beat you up for almost getting blown up, but your back, and I missed you incredibly, so I’m happy.”  I missed seeing his stupid smirk on his face when I threatened to beat him up.

“Well hi there little sis, how are you? Me, I’m swell, ya know, just stuck in a hospital bed for the next 2 or so months. Not too much drama. Thanks for asking. Oh and I missed you too Callie.” Yeah Afghanistan hadn’t changed his personality much at all.

After some more silly bickering and making fun of each other Dr Davey came in and told me that seeing as though it was after 10pm, visiting hours were over an hour ago and Brodie needed more pain meds, it was time for me to leave.

“You can’t get me to leave if you can’t find me Mr Doctor!” I exclaimed as I ducked under the hospital bed and hid. All of a sudden someone, I’m assuming Mr Doctor, grabbed my legs and tugged me out from my amazing hiding spot.

“I’m sorry Callie, I know that Brodie only just got back and was cleared to have visitors but he needs his rest. After all the trauma his body was put through, rest is crucial for his recovery. I’m sure you understand. Oh and if your good and leave now I will let you come back tomorrow. How does that sound?”

“It sounds like your talking to a freaking 7 year old. But hey, if that’s the best you can do for me Mr Doc then I’ll settle for that. I’ll be back here tomorrow smack bang on 10.”

“Callie wait. Hey Doc can I have a quick sec to talk to her before she goes? 5 minutes tops. I promise.” After he stepped back out the door, Brodie pulled me into a tight one armed hug and said “Tomorrow can you please wait until 12pm to come see me?”

“And whys that Odie?”

“One of the Commanding Officers that was with me just after the bombing is coming in to do a check-up interview with me to see if I can remember anything else.” After the whole time I spent talking to him today this is what I had been waiting for. To see some sort of sign that he isn’t doing as well as he is letting on to me. It showed in his eyes when he said the last part about remembering. Brodie is strong willed and won’t ever admit to me that he is hurting on the inside.

“Okay, I’ll drop by after lunch and try to sneak you in some good old Maccas Burgers! How does that sound?”

“Perfect. You’re the best lil sis. Don’t  ever forget that Cal.” After giving him one last hug I walked out, tipped my imaginary hat to Dr Davey and went back to my empty apartment for left over mac and cheese and the latest episode of Pretty Little Liars.
