I'm drowning. I'm drowning in a sea of black...

As I tried to stay afloat, I realized as my feet touched the sand...

I laughed humorlessly as I stood up. The water was only up to my thigh. I walked up to the shore and headed straight forward with no destination in mind. I walked for a day. I noticed that everything I passed was dull and lifeless.

I continued on forward absentmindedly. The next step... I fell. The sky became smaller and smaller. I closed my eyes and prepared to die. Instead of the ground, water caught me and I was drowning for real now. I made the mistake of releasing the air in my lungs. I opened my eyes and flailed my arms out.

A hand enclosed on my wrist and pulled. I was out of the water before I was fully aware of it. I coughed out the water in my lungs. I looked at the person who pulled me up. It was a girl, drenched like I was. I smiled politely and thanked her. She smiled back and introduced herself.

"I'm Anna."

After introducing myself, I studied where I fell. It was a hole filled with water.

I continued my aimless walking but with the company of Joanna.

Sometimes, I would step into a hole filled with water again. Each time different girls saved me. They're names were –

"Jane."

"I'm jasmine."

"Hello! My name's Ella."

They joined me in my wandering. By now there were four of them including Anna. Soon enough, we all became friends. As we went about, I noticed that the surrounding had changed. It was brighter and full of life, a total contrast from before.

One day, we encountered a group. They took one of my friends, Jane. She promised she'll be back soon.

A few days later, we met another group. Much like the first one, they took one of my friends too, Anna. She left with a promise the same as Jane.

I was worried now. What if my remaining friends leave me behind too? No, they wouldn't. Convincing myself with this, we continued on walking.

A few rainy days have passed and none of the two had come back. Worry was eating my mind. What if they decided that they were much more fun to be with than us? What if they decided to stay with those groups? Shaking my head, I continued wandering with Jasmine and Ella.

Jane and Anna finally came back one day and the rains have stopped. I was happy again. However... I noticed that Jane and Anna have this unsatisfied look on their faces.

"You can go back to them if you want to."

They declined, of course, but they couldn't hide the eagerness in their eyes. After a week they left. Jasmine and Ella were the only friends that stayed by me. But we couldn't bring back the happiness from before. It just... felt incomplete. I talked to them too.

"You can go too. Don't worry about me."

Those two were really close and I would sometimes feel as if I don't belong. Soon they, too, left. I was alone again. I continued my wandering. The surrounding has turned back to what it was before, lifeless and dull. I didn't get far before I fell and was drowning again.

A sob came out of my throat though it came out as nothing but a gurgle.

Am I crying?

I don't know.

The ground connected with my back. I stared up at the endless blue. It seems like I reached the bottom. I reached out one hand. A sad smile flitted across my face.

This time... for real... no one is going to save me. They all left... my friends...

I closed my eyes and let my arm go limp.

'Goodbye.'
