My plan to sleep proves to be a bust as I lay in bed, wide awake, at seven in the morning with a sleeping Felix behind me. His arm draped over my waist acting as a protective barrier between me and whatever should harm me. Yet, it doesn't stop the mental battle that I face. No matter how many times I've repeated Silos' words over and over again, my body is in complete and utter shock. I have a brother. Me. Why hadn't our parents told Riley and I, or even just Riley about him. It just doesn't make sense. On top of that, Caden happens to be my Mate; other mate. I've never heard nor scene anyone with two mates. This is all too much.
I brush off Felix's arm from around my waist and stare at his angelic face and puckered lips. His light snores fill the air. Why hadn't he informed me of Caden? Unless he doesn't know about him... what am I thinking? Of course he knows! They're twins! I huff and wrap a dark blue robe around me before starting my stroll down a slightly too dark hallway to my liking. Turning when necessary. How is it that within a day that it feels as if everyone's against me? That all forces of evil are against me? I shake my head and stop in my tracks. This cannot me happening. There must be reasons. Rationale. Anything! As long as I get answers. I look up and realize that I'm standing in front of a large set of wooden doors with intricate patterns carved inside. I've never seen this before. I take a step towards it but am stopped by Lev. 'Don't go in there, Lane.' If someone were to look at me, I'd have my brows furrowed. 'What? Why not?' I look at the door, trailing my eyes upwards. The small carvings of flowers and vines seem to attract me to it. 'I don't know. I'm just getting a weird vibe from it.' I reach towards the door, brushing my fingertip against a tulip petal on the door just as I fist my hand. I bring my arm back to my side and take a step back. 'Alright.' I've always trusted Lev and her "vibes", but for some reason I feel pulled to that door. Like it was meant for me. Like it was a part of me. But it could only be a feeling....
I had my way back to the room with questions still in mind. For now, I'll just have to forget about it. Felix was still sleeping with the duvet bunched up at his waist, revealing his toned abdominal. On normal occasions, I'd ogle them, but not today. Frustration has gotten the best of me. I went to the bathroom, stripping of the robe and my pajamas, and took my time beneath the scolding water.
The bed sheets were in a tangled mess and Felix was nowhere to be seen as I ambled out of the bathroom. He must have gone downstairs. I jumped when arms wrapped around my stomach and feather like kisses were placed on the back of my neck. Felix. His hot breath blew against my neck traveling down my spine, leaving me a shuddering mess. "How was your shower, sweetheart?" His voice sounds so sexy in the morning. It makes me want to jump his bones and- wait. No. The mate bond will not work with me today. I won't allow it. But damn, that's so true.
"It was good."
"I would've joined you if I had woken up earlier. Maybe you can join me now?" He whispers. I gulp and walk out of his arms. Needing to stay away before I do something I'll regret.
"No. I've already taken a shower and now I'm hungry so kitchen it is! Bye!"
I rush out of the room, leaving a discombobulated Felix, and down the stairs to the kitchen. Taking down a box of cereal from atop the fridge, pouring full-fat milk into the bowl and grabbing a spoon I decide to sit outside in the backyard garden. "Lane!" My head turns to the left to see Juliet coming down the stairs, taking two at a time. She jumps into my arms, well-nigh spilling my cereal, in an embrace. I laugh and hug her with my free arm. "I'm so glad you're okay! Do you know what you put everyone through?! In fact, why don't you tell me where you were, hmm?" She pulls away and crosses her arms over her chest. I look side to side before grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the yard.
"Fine, but not here."
Juliet follows me as we make our way through the garden, past the exotic flowers and into a small labyrinth of bushes. We stop halfway through it and take a seat on a worn out wooden bench. She turns to me. "Spill." We've been friends ever since I could remember, proving that she can be trusted not to tell anyone. I sigh and divulge to her everything. Silos being my brother, having another mate, to coming out of the woods to a row of guards. Everything. By the end, her mouth is ajar and she's gazing at the high bush barrier in front of us, trying to process it. I can't blame her, neither can I comprehend it.
She speaks up after a few minutes of silence. "Wow...your brother is hot! Not as hot as Robbyn, though. Your other mate, I wouldn't know."
"Julie! That's not why I told you!"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry but what do you want me to say? That your life is in the ditch at the moment? I don't think so. Maybe you can go ask one of the tell-tales." My face remains blank. She rolls her eyes. "You don't know what tell-tales are."
"Nope."
"I overheard Robbyn talking about them. He said that they were wolves with special gifts, basically powers. He said they were able to read the future and past. If your case was worth it, they'd tell you parts about it."
"Okay, but can they tell me if Silos is my brother or the reason I have two mates?"
"Maybe not the brother part but I honestly don't know. But they might." She shrugs and looks at her watch. "Oh, I've got to go. Sorry. Robbyn was going to take me to this breakfast place nearby."
"It's fine. Talk to you later?" I stand up and give her a hug.
"Of course, girl!" We say our goodbyes and she leaves.
I take a seat and eat a few spoonful of cereal. Just as I'm about to put the spoon back into my mouth, I hear rustling coming from the path we had taken on our way here. Thinking it's just Juliet, I wait for her to turn the corner. "What? Misses me already?" I joke as the steps got closer and turn my head to see an elongated shadow getting closer. Definitely not Juliet. I jump up and crouch behind the bench. The figure comes out of the bush-aligned path, exposing Silos? Silos. "What are you doing here?" The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them. He chuckles when he sees me.
"What are you doing?" He says brushing off my question.
"Don't disregard my question with one of yours. What are you doing here?" I dust off my blue jeans, standing to my full length and clearing my throat as my face reddens.
"To make sure you're okay."
"Listen here. Just because you claim to be my brother, who I have never heard of by the way, it doesn't make you responsible for my safety."
"Because I'm your brother, older brother, I'm responsible for your safety." I'm just about to retaliate but he continues, "Lane, I understand that it's hard for you to comprehend it all, but you need to accept it."
"Hard? That's an understatement. You don't know what I'm going through so don't pretend to know." He runs his hand through his hair.
"Please. I'm only trying to be there for you."
"You can be there for me when I'm ready to 'accept' you." He nods and looks down.
"Alright. But know that I will always be there if you want to talk. You know where to find me." I shake my head yes and he leaves. I let out a breath of air that I didn't know I was holding. Was I too harsh? 'No, you have the right to be upset' Lev comforts. I pick up the cereal that is still barely eaten and discard it into the bushes. I've lost my appetite.
Felix was reading the newspaper at the head of the dining table when I had gotten back to the house. He looked over to me and smiled his hundred watt smile. What's gotten him so happy? I go and sit to the right of him as he finished up his eggs on toast. He put the newspaper on the side and looks at me, still smiling creepily. "Are you okay?"
"Why wouldn't I be? I've got my beautiful mate with me." My brow lifts. "I'm more then great. You want to know why? I've received confirmation for The Ceremony."
"What ceremony?" I pluck a grape from the fruit bowl at the center of the table. His grin widens, if that's even possible.
"My father had spoken to me earlier today. I'm going to be the alpha king next week and you'll be my Luna." My eyes seem to bulge out of their sockets. "And you know what else?" He continues answering his own question. "I get to mark you." My mouth opens, then closes as my mind tries to form words. Before I can say anything, his tender lips find mine it a quick yet meaningful kiss. "You'll be mine and everyone will know it."
