Two days later Adam asked Emily "wanna go do our mission soon?"
Emily looked at him curiously. "What mission?"
"You know..." He lowered his voice. "The paperboy?"
"Oh! Well I can't go outside anymore Adam." Emily replied.
She had gotten banned from going outside. So had Adam, but Emily felt it was mostly because of her. And she definitely didn't think it had to do with getting lost.
Adam looked her dead in the eye. "That's why we go at night. Out the window."
"Adam! Are you crazy? Remember what happened last time?"
"Yeah I know but this time we'd stay in town. And we wouldn't be caught!"
"The paperboy isn't going to be out at night."
He winked at her. "Good thing I know where he lives."
Emily sighed and looked at the ground. "I don't want to get in more trouble. I want to be able to go outside when I'm allowed."
"We won't get caught! Emily I know my way around. Trust me."
She looked him in the eye, trying to tell him everything through her eyes. That she couldn't go. Because she didn't trust him. Or anyone. She looked away, and tears came to her eyes.
Adam felt the shift in emotion. He put his hand on her shoulder. "Emily? Please."
She looked up at him with tearful eyes. She had been trying to figure out everything for a week. It all came back to how she knew nothing. Maybe, just maybe this paperboy could help her.
"Okay. Let's do it."
That night they dressed in black. Emily felt like a ninja spy. Emily and Adam waited in their separate rooms, waiting until midnight.
Finally when Emily looked at her clock it read 12:00am. She opened her door silently. It was strange how none of the doors ever squeaked. Adam opened his a second later, grinning broadly. They crept quietly down the hallway, away from their parents room. Adam led the way into the kitchen. There was a window above the sink.
"Wait. What if there's an alarm?" Emily whispered.
"There is but only if your trying to come in from outside."
"Then won't we get locked outside?"
"We'll put something in the window to keep it slightly open."
Adam opened the window. And then he jumped out of the window, disappearing into the darkness.
Emily couldn't see him at all.
"Put a cup in the window!" He hissed up to Emily.
She did as told and then she crept through. She closed her eyes then jumped into what seemed like oblivion. Her feet hit the ground with a thud, and she opened her eyes. Adam was crouched down by the bushes. She could see more now that she was outside. There was no full moon this time, but her eyes quickly adjusted to the dark.
"Alright." Adam whispered. "Here's the game plan. You follow me, because I know where to go-"
"Last time I followed you we got lost." Emily stated annoyed.
"Just listen, okay? We can't go underneath the streetlights, because there's street sweepers and they'll-"
"Wait what's a street sweeper?"
Adam sighed loudly. "They're kind of like the night watchers but they go on the street. But they're just in vehicles, they don't bring you home. They take you into their vehicle and I don't know what happens from there.
"So we have to stay out of the light. We'll stick to the bushes right by the street. We have to go quickly."
"Okay and what do we do when we get to his house?" Emily asked.
"We'll know when we get there." He replied.
Finally they left. Quietly and swiftly. Emily followed Adam, careful not to get too close, or too far behind. She was scared. Not just about getting caught, but she was scared about trusting him.
They stopped and Adam whispered, "we have to cross the street. So far there's been no street sweepers. I'll go first and you wait here. I'll wave you over. Got it?" He didn't give her time to answer because he just darted off. She watched him as he raced across the street. He made it to the bushes on the other side. She waited in silence, feet poised, ready to run.
Adam waved. Just as she was about to run she heard an odd noise. She froze at the edge of the bushes. She looked to the right from where the sound was coming from. There was a clicking sound, followed by 4 swishes. Adam put his hand up. Stop! He mouthed.
She dove back into the bushes. Her heart was beating fast as she heard the noise become louder and louder. Finally a big vehicle came into view. It was round, like a spaceship. But it had wheels. In front of it was what looked like a large broom. It made the swishing sound. The clicking sound came from the wheels. It moved very slowly. And there where headlights on the top, scouting the side bushes.
Emily knew they would get caught if they stayed there.
She looked to Adam frantically. He was staring at the sweeper. She had to get his attention.
She waved her arms wildly. He didn't look. She stood up and danced around madly. He still didn't look. She had to risk her voice.
"Adam!" She yelled as she ducked down. He finally looked over with a horror stricken face. Her stomach dropped. This was going to be worse than the night watchers. She pointed behind him and mouthed. Go!
She backed up as well. He cocked his head slightly. She didn't know what to do and the vehicle was getting closer.
She turned around and ran up to the side of a house. She looked back and saw Adam doing the same. Then she watched quietly as the street sweeper came.
