THE BANEBERRY CROWN
*A Coming-of-Age Story*

---

Part One: The Girls We Were
Chapter One - The First Lesson

Thessaly Starling was five years old the first time she walked into the palace.

Her mother held her hand - Varina Starling, newly appointed tutor to the Crown Princess, chosen by King Thalion himself because she was the finest etiquette mistress in the Verdant Court. Not noble. Not common, either. Something in between - a woman who understood every rule of fae high society because she'd spent her life teaching them, and who carried herself with the kind of quiet authority that made even lords straighten their posture.

Thessaly walked beside her through halls that smelled like cedar and old magic, her brown hair in two braids, her warm brown eyes taking in everything - the vaulted ceilings, the living vines that crept along the stone, the guards who stood so still they might have been carved.

"Stand straight," Varina said. Not harsh. Just fact. "You are not a guest. You are not a servant. You belong here because I belong here. Act like it."

Thessaly stood straight.

They were led to the princess's study - a bright room at the top of the east tower, windows open to the wind, bookshelves lining every wall. And there, sitting at a desk too large for her, hands folded the way someone had clearly told her to fold them, was a girl with long golden curls and emerald green eyes and the posture of someone who'd been practicing being important since before she could walk.

Elode Baneberry. Five years old. Already perfect. Already performing.

Varina curtsied. "Your Highness. I am Varina Starling. I'll be teaching you court protocol, etiquette, and the art of being a lady."

Elode nodded - a precise, practiced nod. Then her eyes moved past Varina to the girl standing beside her. The girl who was her exact height, her exact age, and who was staring at her with open, undisguised curiosity.

"Who's that?" Elode asked.

"My daughter, Thessaly. She'll be joining our lessons."

This had been the arrangement - Thalion had agreed to it. Varina would not leave her daughter in hired care while she spent her days at the palace. Thessaly would sit in. Learn alongside the princess. It was practical, not political. No one expected anything to come of it.

Everything came of it.

"Hello," Thessaly said. Not a curtsy. Not a bow. Just *hello*, the way children say it - direct, fearless, before the world teaches them to be careful.

Elode looked at her. Something shifted behind those green eyes - surprise, maybe. Or relief. The particular relief of a child who has been surrounded by adults performing reverence and has finally found someone her own size who doesn't seem to care about the crown.

"Hello," Elode said back.

Varina began the first lesson. Proper address. Forms of greeting. How to enter a room, how to leave one, how to hold a teacup without rattling it against the saucer.

Elode already knew most of it. She'd been drilled since she could talk - by nurses, by courtiers, by her father's advisors. She performed each exercise flawlessly, each movement polished and precise.

Thessaly watched. Then did it her own way - not wrong, exactly, but *different*. Looser. More natural. Less like a performance and more like a person.

Varina corrected her gently. Thessaly adjusted. Tried again. Got it right the third time, and when she did, she grinned - a real, full, unguarded grin that had no business in a deportment lesson.
