The brightly colored studio lights hummed overhead, casting a blinding glow over the iconic park set. For years, this had been Barney the Dinosaur's kingdom. He was the undisputed star, the giant purple symbol of love and happiness.Suddenly, the heavy studio doors swung open, and the director stepped onto the floor, clapping his hands to gather the cast and crew.
"Listen up, everyone! We have some big announcements. Ratings are down, and network executives want to freshen things up. Please give a warm welcome to our new permanent cast members: Betty the bunny and buddy the unicorn!"
Barney watches as a orange unicorn and a pink bunny get dragged in by security, both looking confused and alarmed
"H-hey! We never agreed to this! Just take us back to our world!" Betty said, alarmed.
The security officers finally released them, buddy stumbling and hitting the ground with a thud, while Betty hopped away quickly.
"OW! WHERE THE FUCK EVEN ARE WE?" Buddy screamed at the guards, a mix of rage and fear clear in his voice.
"W-welcome to our world?" Barney said, confused and worried.
The director clapped his hands loudly, entirely ignoring Buddy's outburst. "Great energy, people! Let's take five while the crew fixes a lighting issue. Barney, go bond with the new talent!" With a lazy wave of his clipboard, the director strolled off the set to grab a coffee, leaving the cast completely to their own devices.
As soon as the studio doors clicked shut, Buddy pushed himself up from the fake plastic grass. He brushed artificial dirt off his bright orange coat, his jaw clenched. He turned his glare onto Barney, his horn sparking with a tiny, frustrated flash of magic."What the hell are you looking at, you giant purple freak?" Buddy spat, stepping right into Barney's space. "You think this is funny? We were literally dragged here, and you're just standing there smiling like an idiot."Barney blinked his large, unmoving eyes. He didn't drop his smile—mostly because his face was literally built that way—but his voice shifted from his high-pitched show persona to a much more exhausted, grounded tone."First of all, I can't help the smiling," Barney said, crossing his massive purple arms. "Second, I didn't ask for this either. The network executives make the calls. I just work here.""Oh, poor you," Buddy scoffed, rolling his eyes dramatically and pacing around the fake park set. "The big star has to share his spotlight. Meanwhile, Betty and I were ripped out of our actual lives. I don't care about your corporate drama. I'm finding a way out of this fake, neon hellhole."Buddy marched over to the heavy backstage exit doors and threw his weight against them. They didn't budge. He kicked the metal frame with a hoof, letting out a sharp curse as pain shot up his leg."They lock them from the outside during breaks," Barney said quietly, watching him from the center of the set. "Safety hazard, supposedly. But mostly so the extras don't wander off."Buddy spun around, his chest heaving with anger. He wanted to scream, to blast the door open with magic, but his energy was flagging. He glared at Barney, desperately wanting to blame the dinosaur for everything, but Barney was just standing there, looking remarkably patient and annoying."I am going to get out of here," Buddy muttered, walking to the furthest, darkest corner of the stage—right by the fake plastic tree. He sat down heavily, turning his back completely to the dinosaur. "And until I do, stay the hell away from me."Barney sighed, a low sound that rustled through his felt costume. He didn't follow Buddy. He just sat down on a nearby prop bench, picking up his script to review it. He was used to difficult co-stars, but this unicorn was a whole new level of hostile. For the next ten minutes, neither of them said a word. The silence between them was thick, tense, and absolutely freezing—the perfect, bitter foundation for a very long road ahead.
The silence stretched on, thick and heavy, punctuated only by the distant, muffled hum of the studio's ventilation system. Buddy kept his back firmly turned, his eyes fixed on the painted backdrop of blue skies and cartoon clouds. It felt like a cage.Nearly an hour passed before the studio lights suddenly flickered, shifting from the blinding, hot glare of production mode to a dim, cool blue overhead wash. A harsh buzz echoed over the PA system, followed by the bored voice of a security guard: "Stage 4 is on lockdown for the night. Crew call is 0600. Cast remains on site."The finality of the click that followed was depressing. Buddy let out a sharp, frustrated breath through his nose. He risked a glance over his shoulder to see how the dinosaur was handling being locked in.Barney hadn't moved from the prop bench, but his posture was entirely different. Without the cameras or the crew to perform for, the giant purple dinosaur looked completely deflated. He slumped against the fake wooden park bench, his heavy tail draped awkwardly over the edge. Because his face was physically molded into that wide, unyielding grin, his closed eyes and slumped shoulders created a deeply unsettling contrast. He looked profoundly wiped out, his giant chest rising and falling in a heavy, snoring rhythm as he drifted into an uncomfortable sleep.Buddy stared. The angry words he had prepared died in his throat. He had spent the last two hours wanting to rip that permanent, stupid smile off the dinosaur's face. But looking at him now, Buddy realized that smile wasn't a choice—it was just how the guy was built. Strip away the lights and the music, and Barney didn't look like a corporate tyrant. He just looked like an exhausted, captive creature whose very biology was designed to look happy, even when he was miserable.Buddy scoffed softly to himself, turning back toward his corner and curling his legs beneath him on the stiff turf. He still hated this place, and he still wasn't planning on making nice. But as he closed his eyes against the dim blue light, the bitter edge of his anger had dulled into a quiet, uneasy curiosity.
