"Ow!"
I dropped my ball as the pain sensation suddenly came from my right arm. I looked over to see a strange mark appear there. A tattoo drawn in circles and star in the middle, it was small but noticeable.
I stare at the symbol eyes wide with surprised and dumbfounded.
"Look! Big sis V has a soulmate!"
The children began to surround me with enthusiasm, but I never minded them as my attention still glued to the brand new mark on my arm.
"Looks like you are fated, Hina."
I look up to one of the orphanage attendees. Miss Gina, was one of the best care takers and very fond of the children in the Rose Graden Orphanage. I've known her all my life, she's the one that raised and taught me everything she knows. My mother figure and my role model.
Miss Gina patted my head with gentle and fondness in her eyes, her expression were slightly dazed but I could tell she's hiding her true expression behind the fake smile.
'Miss Gina has been feeling a bit upset lately.....I couldn't tell the difference between what's genuine and what's not from her anymore,' I thought to myself as I stare at her figure walking away from me to play with the other children.
I should've known....that was the first sign.
Two days later, another mark appears this time two. One was located on my right shoulder blade that's drawn a circle and a triangle in the middle. Whilst the other on the inner thigh of my left leg that's drawn a snowflake with tiny star on the side.
I was baffled.
'Another one? No...two?'
I didn't notice Miss Gina walked into my room as Istared at the newly fresh marks on my body. She froze on the spot, her hands trembled as she grips into her long skirt, she shakily breathes out before putting on her usual motherly smile to me.
"Oh my, looks like our Hina is Mis popular~ Congratulations, my dear."
Yet somehow, that congratulations speech doesn't sound pleasant.
I should've known....that was the second sign.
I washed the used pans carefully, not wanting to scratch the non-stick pans. Another sting sensation stops my movement and froze me on the spot. I quickly rinse my hands and quickly hid in the girls bathroom and searched my body, searching for the source.
My eyes widen in fraction to see four marks appeared imbedded on parts of my body.
One was located on my waist, it was drawn like an arrow and a bow.
The second was on my wrist, a gun with rose.
The third was on my neck, a spider web with spider.
And the last was on the center of my back, a red gem with book.
My jaw dropped open, thunderstruck by the amounts of marks I'm getting.
'How.....how many more?'
Unaware that the familiar figure watching me from the bathroom stalls, eyes narrowed in rage and jealousy.
I should've known....that was the third sign.
It was three days later, I decided to go to the orphanage's library. Wearing a large hoodie bigger than my figure and lang baggy sweatpants, hiding my soulmates marks completely.
I sat down by the large window at the back of the library, it was quite and peaceful. Almost no one here. It's just me, myself and the books that I took from the bookshelves. I jotted down the notes I need for my upcoming finals soon, but was then distracted by the beautiful sunset and the calm outside view.
I didn't realize that three more marks began to appear as I was too distracted by the view in front of me.
I found out when I arrived back to my room as I changed into my pajamas. I was shocked, of course.
One mark was located on my ankle, it was shaped like a dagger with snake wrapped around.
The second was located behind my right ear, a hammer with thunder decorated around the hammer.
And the last was located on my left forehand, an hourglass with red cape drape around it.
I was stunned.....ten soulmates in total. Definitely not normal and definitely rare.
In this world, soulmates are common to have one or two, but ten are unheard off. There are some without their soulmate but most are destined to meet. For those that didn't meet theirs choose to be with those who didn't get to meet theirs early, afraid of being alone.
And I have ten......ten soulmates.
I'm scared, terrified and lost.
Not because of howuch I have, but because of how long will I have to wait to reach it.
The next three months was my birthday day, the day I turned 17. One more year and I will be leaving the orphanage. Finding my own path, my own life and my own story.
But, it's not always so simple.
Miss Gina had cornered me on the empty hallway, her eyes were wide with fury, envy, anguish and heartbroken. Eyes red and swollen with tears stains down her cheeks, her eyeliner smudge and her natural warm complexion is now pale and broken.
I stood there, back leaning against the wall. My chest heaved in panic, I couldn't take my eyes off Miss Gina.
Terrified of what she will if I do.
"Why....? Why you? Why does it have to be you?!" She screamed with so much pain, slamming her palms on the wall behind me.
Her other hand clasp around my neck, tightly gripping it making me struggling to breathe property. I tried to scream but her grips tighten every second, crushing my windpipe.
"Why does mine reject me?! Why does he want to cut off our bond?! Was I not enough? Why are you so loved when you have nothing!" Her voice grew louder each words coming out of her mouth.
Miss Gina's grip was so tight that she somehow lifted my whole body off the ground due to her adrenaline. I'm trying to survive by clawing and wiggle put her grasp. But, it was futile.
My vision began to blur and the next thing I knew, I blacked out.
The last thing I saw was her finally dropping me and her walking away from my weakened figure.
When I woke up, I could smell ash and smoke filling my lungs. An immense heat coating my body like I'm inside of a furnace. I blinked my eyes open to see the cold hallway is now burn bright by the flames. The roof tiles are falling down like fallen leaves as flames engulfed the surrounding and anything flammable.
I coughs as the air around me thinning away. I saw a window by the end of the hallway and quickly tried to stand up. My legs almost buckled by my still weakend from, but I forced myself to stand up and slowly jogs towards the opening.
Once I'm near the window, I threw myself out from the second floor of the orphanage, landing hard on the grassy ground resulting a sprain on my wrist. I cried out loud at the pain but didn't stop running until the burning building behind me disappear from the view.
Ignoring the sirens, the spectators and the scene.
I ran and never look back, too scared and afraid.
Three months later, I continue to wander off.
I never returned, I didn't mind. Manhattan was a big place.
The news about the Rose Garden Orphanage burning was all over the news. After all, it was one of the biggest orphanages and its funds support was mostly coming from the billionaire Tony Stark himself.
He was even there to mourn for the fallen victims.
But, I hid.
This time, hiding from the world.
