You were quite the disinteresting Cuban citizen. A young man in his 20's, under paid and over exploited, sick of the government all together...occasionally involved in petty crime and that got you locked up for an un-noteworthy amount of time. You had hardly been in there a week until a group of men had showed up with some pretty hefty charges and lengthy sum of time to serve. Or at least from what you caught from the grape vine. They'd staged some sort of attempt at a coup? Over throwing Batista? Well that's certainly a more fascinating crime than anyone else there, according to you.Amongst them was a young lawyer...who kept his curly, raven hair slicked back and smooth and his facial hair neatly trimmed. He was tall, broad, and a bit chubby. Overall seemed like a stand-up kind of guy. Not who you'd expect to try and overthrow the government, and you couldn't help but admire the guy from a far. Gathering things you'd think he'd like: books, snacks, extra socks...just things you try and sneak to him to grow closer...you did find him very fascinating. Today, as usual you were looking like your typical, simple self. Simply staring at this guy, waiting for an opportunity to go over and talk to him. Perhaps today would be the day you'd strike up a conversation instead of dropping your gifts off and squeaking a clipped "you're welcome" Before scurrying away. Today, you'd managed to procure yourself a rather fascinating book title that you'd thought he would enjoy. You slinked over to his group where he was sitting in silence as the embers of their previous discussion died out. You slid the boom across the table to him and he glanced over to you.
"You again..?"
He laughed awkwardly, unsure of how to respond.
"And this is for me again?"
You nodded ,confirming his ask, staring him down. An expectant , excited stare that thoroughly creeped him out, if he was being  honest. Instead of your usual scurry away you stood there a moment, gathering the strength to look in his eyes...
"Hi..."
He looked a bit surprised to hear you speak, and annoyed that you hadn't left him...
"Hello."
He responded, trying to convey his irritation with you. It worked. You felt it. That made you even more nervous than before and you began to sweat.
"How you doin?"
He sighed.
"I'm fine."
His frustration with you was palpable, but you wanted to prove to him that you weren't annoying or just plain weird.
"Are you busy right now?"
He paused for a moment and picked up the book, examining it.
"Why do you always give me things like this?"
Him ignoring your question and asking you his own threw off your script. You paused for a moment, staring at him, thinking for a good reason other than you had a desire to simply talk with him because you didn't want to appear even stranger than you already did.
"U-uh...I thought...what you tried...was admirable...tell me about it?
He hadn't expect that, his demeanor shifted slightly. Now he hadn't exactly adored you, but he stopped treating you like a hungry canine begging for scraps.
"You're interested in a government take over...?"
You nodded quickly, and excitedly.
"You know, if you wanted to talk about this you could have just asked, you didn't have to spend your time and risk your safety getting me these things."
You shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant whilst your cheeks were heating up. He extended his hand to you.
"Fidel Castro."
You shook his hand and gave him your name in turn. He took a brief not of how his slightly-larger-than-average hand dwarfed yours...strange. He calmly adjusted his posture to face you in a more professional manner.
"Do you know why?"
You paused...staring, waiting for a continuation that never came.
"Do I know what...?"
"Do you know why we need this?"
You fidgeted nervously with the fabric of your shirt.
"No...I guess not. I have a sort of idea on why I, myself would like it, but I don't know your reasoning."
It was an uncharacteristically lengthy expression of thought from you. Usually you were quiet and avoided big discussions, but something about this mysterious man made you want to talk! You noticed he seemed excited to be on this topic at least as well.
You tried to keep up with his words but occasionally got caught up on a word, phrase, or concept that he would explain to you with surprising patience. For a man who seemed hellbent on immediate change he was actually pretty good at explaining things slowly in ways you understood. He was the first yuppie, white kid you'd ever met that didn't make you want to beat their head in with a blunt farming instrument. The talk of politics evolved into many things, all more than trivial, but less than a late night talk with a close friend. But soon enough it came time to sleep and you retired back to wherever you slept for that night. But here's the thing...it's so cliche but you just couldn't sleep well. The thoughts of your cringey replies, your foolish misunderstandings, but also more positive thoughts. Would he continue talking to you? Would he become your friend? Would we be closer than friends? But eventually you fell into your usual, uncomfortable, paranoid sleep.
