Chapter 1

A sharp pain is the first thing she senses. The next second, she can tell the pain is coming from the top of her head.

She is convinced, she is dead.

There is no other explanation for the darkness she is seeing. She tries to move forward. It does not work. She even fails to open her mouth and yell for help.

The pain spreads from the top of her head to her whole body. It makes her want to scream.

A soft breath escapes from her lips as she opens her eyes. A steady beep fills her ears. She has to blink twice to clear her vision.

A familiar face leans into her view.

"Lidya! Lidya, you are awake!"

Lidya parts her dry lips with difficulty. It takes a moment for her to recognize the woman in front of her.

Her best friend. Hilal Yelekçi. Lidya cannot remember the last time she has seen Hilal cry.

Lidya wants to build a proper sentence. All she manages is a sound, even she cannot identify. Hilal smiles at Lidya through her tears.

"Don't exhaust yourself. I am going to get your doctor."

Before Hilal leaves, she squeezes Lidya's hand and flashes her one more smile.

The door shuts. What is left is the steady beep coming from her right and the sound of her own breaths.

Lidya realizes what else is unusual, except her current situation. Besides Hilal, there is another person who would be over the moon seeing her awake.

Whatever Hilal meant by that is still a mystery for Lidya.

Lidya assumes her younger sister is scared to approach her. Whatever happened to her, definitely affected Karya too.

Lidya notices then something major.  She is inside a hospital room. The chances that her sister could be hospitalized too is high.

Her breathing quickens. The beep becomes unsteady. A sudden strength takes over Lidya. She lifts her upper body, ignoring how sore her limbs feel.

Just then the door opens. A woman with ginger hair enters. The confidence she carries herself with vanishes when she meets Lidya's bewildered gaze.

A moment of silence passes, then Lidya starts pulling on the wires she is attached. The ginger moves closer to the hospital bed.

"Ms. Lidya. My name is Mina Solak. I am lawyer. Actually, I am your lawyer. And my first legal advice for you is to not interrupt your medical treatment just like that."

Lidya stares at Mina. She never had a lawyer in her life, let alone have the money for a lawyer. However, this lawyer is only one of her problems. She needs to find her sister first.

Mina furrows her brows when Lidya makes a slurred sound.

"What? Do you need something?"

Lidya has enough. She will find her sister on her own. Even if that means searching through every damn corner of this hospital.

Finally, Lidya rips off the last cord.

She orders her brain to move. It feels like she is moving in slow motion. After making the first step, Mina catches her by her arm.

"Just tell me what you want, and I will get it for you."

Another slurred sound. Mina takes her back to the bed. Lidya struggles like a toddler in her arms, still too weak to use her actual strength.

"Lidya! What are you doing?"

Hilal has returned with the doctor. Though Lidya is not sure if that actually is the doctor. The woman looks younger than 25 years old.

Mina allows Hilal to take over. Lidya holds on to her best friend for dear life.

"K...kar...ya."

At the same time the doctor yells something to someone outside. When Lidya doubts her best friend heard her, she proves her wrong.

"Karya is fine."

"Fine?"

Lidya cusses internally that she is not able to speak properly. What the hell happened to her?

"I promise you, she is fine. Karya is safe. You need to rest. You will see her, okay? First, you need to rest. You don't want her to see you like this."

Hilal caresses over her arm, making Lidya lie down. Lidya takes a deep breath. She trusts Hilal with her life. They always had each other's back.

On her right side, a nurse is working on reattaching the cords. Lidya closes her eyes, trying to relax.

She misses how Hilal watches the doctor preparing a syringe. Hilal gestures for the doctor that it is not necessary anymore.

The young doctor waves her off and focuses on the syringe.

Mina breaks the brief peace Lidya experiences. "Is it normal that she cannot speak properly or is it something caused by the accident?"

Hilal whips her head to Mina. Then her gaze moves in the speed of light to Lidya.

Accident. It echoes in Lidya's mind. Fragments fill in the darkness and the void in her mind.

Lidya remembers she was not alone in the accident. Her girlfriend was with her.

The steady beep becomes unsteady again.

Lidya rips her eyes open and jolts forward. The doctor pushes her back inside the mattress, a strength Lidya did not expect.

A stab in her right arm makes Lidya sigh quietly. As more pictures fill the void, her eyelids get heavier.

The last thing Lidya manages to do before her world turns dark again, is reading the name tag of the doctor. Sueda Uluca.
