The Mark That Should Not Be

In Veyr, a life is not guessed at.

It is written on the skin.

On the morning a child turns nineteen, the village gathers. An elder takes a silver needle to the left wrist. What rises there is called a Fatemark—Hearth, Harvest, Road, Loom, Blade.                        A path. A promise. A kindness, the priests say, so no one has to waste years walking against their own grain.

Most marks are ordinary.

Most futures are survivable.

Eira Vale was not raised to be a warning.

She was a forest girl from Elverin, all dark braid and river-colored eyes, the kind of quiet that made deer forget to run. She predicted storms. She spoke a dead language in her sleep. She drew, again and again, a palace of seven towers she had never seen.

She told herself the Marking would make her simple at last.

It did not.

What burned into her wrist stopped the celebration. Two circles, one laid over the other. A star cracked down the heart. The elder recognized it and would not speak its name.

That night the Crown came for her.

Not with scholars.

Not with questions.

With riders, and a prince's seal, and an order that did not sound like mercy.

Prince Rhen Draven had seen the mark.

And he was coming to end her—
before the star could finish what it started.

Author's note

Welcome to Veyr.

If you were Eira, and that mark burned onto your wrist in front of the whole village — would you run, or wait for the riders?
