The media had been parked outside the TVF Sports Hall in Ankara since seven in the morning. Cameras, microphones, reporters from every major Turkish outlet--all waiting for a single photo of the national team's newest weapon.
Inside, the world was stripped down to raw athletics. The humid air smelled of floor polish, heavy air conditioning, and deep heat rub.
Zehra Gunes sat on the bench, leaning forward as she metodically wrapped white athletic tape around her long fingers. As a middle blocker for VakifBank and the face of Turkish volleyball, Zehra's life was built on control and structure. But more than that, as a senior member of the squad, she felt a genuine sense of responsability toward the team's harmony.
"They're going crazy outside," Hande Baladin said, tossing her bag onto the bench next to Zehra and slumping down to lace up her shoes. "You'd think we're hosting the Champions League final today."
"It's Vargas," Zehra said quietly, keeping her eyes on her hands as she pulled the tape tight. "The whole country has been waiting for this moment since her naturalization went through. She's been through a lot--new country, new language, huge expactations. We need to make sure she feels welcome."
"Look at you, always the caring big sister," Hande teased. "Good luck with that. They say she doesn't talk much."
Before Zehra could reply, the heavy metal doors at the far end of the facility clanged open. The casual hum of chatter among players instantly evaporated.
Melissa Vargas walked in.
She moved with an easy slouch, wearing a black zip-up hoodie over her national team jersey, headphones draped around her neck. The intricate tattoos covering her arm peeked out from her sleeve. She carried her gym bag slung over one shoulder, her gaze fixed mostly on the floor as she navigated the crowded room.
To Zehra, she looked almost reserved. A young talent dropped into a foreign world with a heavy flag placed on her shoulders.
She's probably overwhelmed, Zehra thought, felt a sudden swell of empathy. I should the one to bridge the gap.
"Mamma mia! Finally!"
Coach Santarelli's loud Italian accent shattered the silence. He marched straight over to Melissa, clapping his hands aggressively before pulling her into a hug.
"Look at you! Ready to smash the bloor into the floor?" Melissa gave a modest, polite nod, offering a small, almost shy smile to the coach. "Yes, Coach. Ready," she replied in a quiet voice.
As Santarelli clapped her on the back and pointed her toward the rest of the squad, Zehra decided it was time to step up. She straightened her jersey and walked directly toward the newcomer with a smile.
"Welome to the team," Zehra said, keeping her tone kind. "If you need help with anything--translating, finding your way around Ankara, or just getting used to Santarelli's crazy energy--you can come to me, okay?"
Melissa paused. She slowly lifted her head toward Zehra's eyes. The quiet, reserved facade melted away in a split second.
Melissa's dark eyes narrowed slightly, glinting with a dangerous, playful heat. Her lips slowly curled up into a lazy, attractive smirk that made Zehra's heart skip a beat.
She leaned in just an inch closer--close enough for Zehra to catch the faint, addictive scent of sweet vanilla and expensive woody cologne radiating from her skin.
"I don't need a guide, Gunes," Melissa whispered, her voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp that sounded impossibly smooth. "But I'll remember where to find you."
Zehra froze, her warm smile instantly locking in place like drying cement.
What?
Before Zehra could process the sudden wave of heat washing over her neck, Santarelli blew his whistle sharply. "All right, girls! Dynamic warm-up! Two by two! Pair up, let's go! Dai, fast rotation!"
The gym snapped back into action. Sneakers squeaked against the red-and-blue taraflex floor as balls were rolled out. Zehra stood motionless for a second, trying to regain her footing, when a shadow fell over her again.
Melissa hasn't walked away. She was standing right there, effortlessly spinning a volleyball on the top of her index finger, watching Zehra with that same provocative look.
"Partner?" Melissa asked, tilting her head.
"I...usually pair with Hande," Zehra stammered, hating the slight hesitation in her own voice. She pulled her shoulders back, trying desperately to regain her authoritative composure. "And I thought you might want to ease into things."
"I don't like easy," Melissa murmured. She stopped the ball between her palms, tossing it lightly from hand to hand. "Are you scared I'll hit too hard for you, Zehra?"
The way Melissa dropped her formal surname and used her first name, sent a sharp tremor straight down Zehra's spine.
"Scared?" Zehra scoffed, stepping directly into Melissa's personal space until their shoulders were nearly brushing. "Let's see if your pass is as accurate as your mouth."
"Show me," Melissa whispered back, her eyes dropping down to Zehra's lips for a fraction of a second before snapping back to her eyes.
They moved to the sideline to begin their warm-up passes. What was supposed to be a gentle, introductory drill instantly devolved into a silent, intense war of provocation.
Zehra pushed her passes hard and fast, aiming them dead-center at Melissa's chest, trying to break her rhythm and prove a point. But Melissa met every single ball with maddening grace, absorbing the force with perfect technique and sending the ball back with a crisp, heavy snap of her wrists.
"Not bad," Zehra remarked coolly after a sharp exchange.
"I told you," Melissa said, catching Zehra's return with one hand and holding the ball against her hip. She took two slow steps toward the net, lowering her voice so only Zehra could hear over the squeaking of shoes. "I handle things very well. Especially when someone tries to take care of me."
Zehra's breath hitched. The air between them felt suffocatingly thick, charged with an undeniable physical attraction that had absolutely nothing to do with tactics or volleyball.
"Don't get comfortable," Zehra warned, her voice dropping an octave as she stepped right up to the net, refusing to back down. "This is my court."
"Then share it with me," Melissa murmured, tossing the ball up between them.
As both of them reached up for the ball at the exact same moment, their hands collided over the top band of the net. Melissa's long, warm fingers brushed firmly against Zehra's taped knuckles. A sudden jolt of heat surged through Zehra's arm, making her pull in a sharp intake of air.
Neither of them pulled away.
For three agonizing, breathless seconds, they stayed locked there—fingers tangled over the white mesh of the net, chest heaving, eyes trapped in a silent, intoxicating power struggle.
"Güneş! Vargas! Are you two dancing or warming up?!" Santarelli's voice barked across the court.
The spell broke.
Melissa pulled her hand back painfully slowly, her fingertips dragging deliberately across the tape on Zehra's skin before letting go. She let out a low, satisfied chuckle, turning back toward the baseline with a slow, confident sway in her step.
Zehra stood frozen at the net, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She looked down at her hand, still burning from the lingering touch.
She had approached Melissa expecting a shy, lost girl who needed protection. Instead, she had just walked straight into a trap—and for reasons that terrified her, Zehra wasn't sure she wanted to escape it.
