Beijing, China
At six in the morning, the Lin family home was already awake.
A black luxury car waited outside the gates.
Two bodyguards stood beside it, while a driver placed a large suitcase into the trunk.
Upstairs, Lin Yichen stood in front of his bedroom mirror.
He looked at his reflection.
He was dressed neatly, his passport tucked safely inside his jacket.
Everything was ready.
Everything except him.
A knock came at the door.
"Yichen?"
His mother stepped inside.
"You're leaving soon."
"I know."
She looked around his room.
"You're really going to be gone for a long time."
Yichen gave a small smile.
"That's what Dad wants."
His mother was quiet.
She knew how unhappy he had been since his father announced that he would study in America.
"You don't have to pretend you're excited," she said.
Yichen looked at her.
"I don't want to go."
"I know."
"I could study here."
"I know."
"Then why does everyone keep telling me this is good for me?"
His mother sat beside him.
"Because your father believes he's protecting your future."
"He's deciding my future."
She didn't argue.
His father had always been like that.
After the divorce, Lin Weihao had built his technology company into one of the largest educational technology companies in Beijing. He believed that money, education, and planning could solve almost every problem.
Yichen didn't agree.
His mother reached for his hand.
"Maybe America won't be as bad as you think."
Yichen looked away.
"What if I don't like it?"
"Then you'll come home."
He looked at her.
"Really?"
"Really."
That answer made him smile.
She pulled him into a hug.
"Just remember to take care of yourself."
"You too."
"Call me when you arrive."
"I will."
"Every day."
Yichen laughed quietly.
"Every day."
Another knock came.
"Master Yichen," a bodyguard said from outside. "We need to leave."
