I stood still. Like in shock. I couldn't move a muscle. My mind had stopped for a second. The voices had calmed down. The only sound that broke the eternal quiet were the water drops from a faucet breaking a puddle's thin surface somewhere every couple seconds.
She shook. The hallway was dark. The walls weathered. It was a basement's hallway. Small windows to one side near the ceiling with broken glass were the only light source, letting the silver light of the night in. The Moon shine lit up the bright white walls with their spots of mold in a terrifying pitch black contrast.
While crossing this hallway it was that I stopped. I noticed something out of the ordinary. To my left, on the illuminated side of the hallway, hung a mirror. I don't know if it was new there or if it was just the first time I perceived its presence. Either way I couldn't walk past it. I turned towards the glass and stared. The world had never felt so still before. The night never had been so quiet before. The form in the mirror was shaking. One might've suspected she was freezing. But they wouldnt have known. They wouldnt have understood. She has never felt the cold. Nor anything else as far as she remembers.
The shaking pale creature now changed, or did she? I stood there admiring the picture. She had for a split second shown a dark presens not comprehensible for any mirror eyed mind. Now she was just the same shaking pale silhouette again. But she was different. Her dress had changed, now with a far more beautiful cut, but still ripped the same way as before. Her hair falling differently but still with the same chaotic tangled texture. She was still the same...just different.
Ive never really looked at that person. Nor did I know her. So close. So much time together but she was nothing more than the stranger in the mirror.
My mind went quiet again. I lost any sense of time if I ever had one. I looked at her. And she looked back. A tear ran down her cheek. The hair was covering it but I knew it. Her secret was safe with me. It was as if time was standing still. She gave me another look. Even though she wasn't moving a muscle and just holding eye contact while shivering. She must've been so lonely in there. Her eyes were so deep. Even though her face was like stone her eyes silently screamed in fear. I saw her and would be the only one who would see her. Her true self.
She looked at me and I could see all her pain. It was terrible and objectively not so much worse than my own. But she didn't deserve it. She didn't deserve to go through this all. I wanted to hug her. Step through to her and show her she is not alone. But I couldn't. It was a mirror and she wasn't real. At least thats what I wished for her. She cried and nobody could see, nobody could come to calm her down. I wished nothing more than to help her. I'd give everything for her to be happy.
I stepped closer to the mirror feeling as if strings were pulling me back on the straight way through the hallway I take once in a while without much thought. I reached my hand out and pressed it against the glass. She did the same. Our hands touched. We both kneed there and maybe weren't so alone anymore. I looked at her. She looked back at me with eyes as if she knew I was gonna say something. Realizing that at first when my lips opened themselves there was not a single tone leaving them. Without moving her head she nodded at me as if trying to encourage me. "I promise you, I will get you out of there. I may not know how yet but you dont deserve to suffer like that." I said turning my look to the ground because I couldn't look her in the eyes giving a promise I knew I couldn't hold. I looked up again but the girl was gone. There was only my reflection looking back at me, lifeless like a reflection does. She was gone but I still felt the warmth of her presence within me. A smile appeared in my face and I made a silent sigh when I stood up again to return to my nightly routine. I felt a breeze of joy remembering the little girl and the better place she might be at now. I repeated the moment and the promise in my mind again before the silence with its sounds and voices got louder again and I forgot about her.
I continued down the hallway like I always do.
