[AUDIO TRANSCRIPT: PRECINCT 4, INTERROGATION ROOM B] [DATE: REDACTED] [SUBJECT: FEMALE, 30s. SUSPECT IN THE ABDUCTION OF ELENA R.]
The fluorescent light hums.
It is a dying, insectoid sound, vibrating against the cinderblock walls.
Detective Miller slams his palms flat on the metal table.
The sharp crack echoes, but the woman in the handcuffs doesn't flinch. She doesn't even blink. She just sits there, posture immaculate, hands folded neatly in her lap as if she's waiting for a bus rather than facing a life sentence.
"We found the restraints, Clara," Miller says, his voice a low, ragged growl. "We found the soundproofing in the basement. We found the blood. You want to tell me why you kept her in the dark for eight months? You want to tell me what you were doing to her?"
The woman tilts her head.
A slow, serene smile spreads across her lips. It is a terrifying expression, entirely devoid of warmth.
"I wasn't doing anything to her, Detective," she says. Her voice is smooth, melodic, and sickeningly calm. "I was just helping her find her voice."
"You tortured her."
"I challenged her," the woman corrects gently. She leans forward, the chains rattling softly. "You're looking at this all wrong. You think I'm the architect. You think I built the maze."
She lets out a soft, breathy laugh.
"I didn't write the story, Detective. I just played the character she gave me."
Miller stares at her, his jaw tightening. "Who? Who is she?"
The woman's smile widens, but her eyes remain dead, fixed on the two-way mirror as if she can see the people standing behind it.
"She's watching you read this," the woman whispers.
Miller lunges, grabbing her by the collar, but she just keeps smiling.
Laughing now.
A high, hysterical sound that bounces off the concrete walls.
Echoing.
Echoing.
Echoing—
