Before Anyone Knew Their Names

Long before the lights, the stages, and the cameras, there was simply a small practice room in Seoul and a group of young boys trying to figure out what they were doing with their lives. They were trainees then, nothing more. There were no fans waiting outside the building, no cameras following them, and no one knew their names beyond the people they met inside the company. They spent most of their days practicing until their bodies were tired, eating whatever they could find, arguing over the smallest things, and then waking up the next morning to do it all over again. It was an ordinary life, although none of them knew just how extraordinary it would become.

Among them was a sixteen-year-old boy named Kim Taehyung. He wasn't V yet. That name belonged to a future none of them could see. For now, he was simply Taehyung-the boy from Daegu who had somehow found his way into this unfamiliar world. He was energetic in a way that sometimes made the other trainees wonder where he found the strength. He could be playful, curious, stubborn, and occasionally a little rebellious. He didn't always behave the way people expected him to, and sometimes his strange jokes or unpredictable actions made people think he was simply being foolish. But Taehyung wasn't foolish. He was sixteen. He was still a teenager trying to understand himself, trying to make friends, trying to become better at something he had only recently begun taking seriously. There was an innocence to him that he didn't always show openly, hidden underneath all the noise and mischief.

A little further away from him, there was another boy who was still trying to become comfortable in the same place. Jeon Jungkook was fourteen, and Seoul was still unfamiliar to him. He had come from Busan and suddenly found himself surrounded by older boys who already seemed to know each other better than he knew them. Jungkook was shy, almost painfully so at times. He didn't know when to join a conversation or how to approach people without feeling awkward, so he often chose the easier option-he stayed quiet and watched. It wasn't because he didn't want friends. He simply hadn't learned how to make them yet.

Their first meeting wasn't anything remarkable. There wasn't some grand moment when they immediately knew they would become important to each other. It was much simpler than that. Taehyung happened to come across Jungkook while the younger trainee was attending a vocal lesson. He noticed the unfamiliar face, the quiet boy who seemed more comfortable listening than speaking, and naturally became curious. Jungkook noticed him too, although he probably didn't know what to make of the energetic older boy standing nearby. There were only a few words between them, a simple introduction, and then they went back to whatever they had been doing. It was the kind of meeting that could easily have been forgotten.

Except Taehyung remembered him.

Over the next few days, they began seeing each other more often. There was no sudden transformation between them. They weren't immediately inseparable, and neither of them went looking for some great friendship. They were simply two trainees who happened to share the same space. Sometimes they would sit in the same room without talking much. Sometimes Taehyung would say something ridiculous and catch Jungkook trying not to laugh. Sometimes Jungkook would quietly smile at something Taehyung did, and Taehyung would notice even if he pretended not to. Slowly, almost without either of them realizing it, the awkwardness began to disappear.

The other trainees were becoming part of that little world too. Namjoon was usually absorbed in music and carried himself with a seriousness that made him seem older than he was. Yoongi had his own quiet rhythm and could disappear into his thoughts for hours. Seokjin had a way of making his presence known, even when he wasn't trying. Hoseok brought energy into the room and seemed capable of making even the most exhausting practice feel lighter. Jimin was constantly pushing himself, determined to improve. And then there were Taehyung and Jungkook, who were slowly becoming comfortable enough to share the same silence.

Perhaps that was what made their friendship different in the beginning. It didn't need to be announced. Nobody had to decide that they were friends. It happened naturally. Jungkook slowly stopped feeling like he had to be careful around Taehyung, and Taehyung slowly learned how to read the quiet younger boy. He learned that Jungkook wasn't actually as serious as he appeared. There was a playful side underneath all that shyness, but it took time for it to come out.

One evening, Taehyung found himself waiting at the dorm for Jungkook. He didn't have any grand reason for doing so. Maybe he wanted to talk to him. Maybe he wanted company. Maybe he had simply gotten used to seeing the younger boy around and noticed when he wasn't there. The others came and went, the dorm gradually became quieter, and eventually the tiredness of the day caught up with him. Taehyung fell asleep while waiting.

Jungkook returned later that night. He entered quietly, careful not to wake anyone, and found Taehyung already asleep. There was no conversation between them that night. Jungkook didn't wake him, and Taehyung never knew that the younger boy had come back while he was sleeping. It was nothing more than an ordinary moment in the life of two trainees.

But sometimes, the moments that stay with us aren't the dramatic ones. They're the small ones we barely notice while they're happening.

Back then, they didn't know what was waiting for them. They didn't know that the seven boys around them would eventually become known across the world. They didn't know that Kim Taehyung would one day become V, or that Jungkook would become one of the most recognizable young artists in the world. They didn't know about the stages, the awards, the endless flights, or the millions of people who would eventually follow their journey.

They were simply Taehyung and Jungkook.

A sixteen-year-old who talked too much and a fourteen-year-old who hardly talked at all.

Two boys who were still learning how to become comfortable in a new place.

Two trainees who happened to enjoy each other's company.

And somewhere in those ordinary days, without either of them realizing it, something very simple had begun-a friendship.

Nothing more needed to happen yet.

There was still plenty of time.

Tomorrow would bring another practice, another meal, another argument, another joke, and perhaps another reason for the two boys to sit together.

For now, that was enough.

They were young.

They were unknown.

And their story was only beginning.
