“Rundown how, like tired?” because she wasn’t anyone to comment on being tired. That nap on the train- both of them- might have helped a little but hardly made a dent after nearly a week of next to no rest. Add on the side effects of the epi-pen and she really wasn’t much better off.
“Like…damaged. Crumbling facades…broken windows?”
He didn’t think she would understand, well she did. Lizzy had been beat to hell.
Sera could only press a hand over her mouth, she should have expected as much from her Uncle’s men.
“Did…do you know if she said anything?” she couldn’t keep up this cryptic bullshit with that new weight on her shoulders.
“No, but I don’t think it’s over for her either…she could use an Angel.”
Sera focused on his face for a moment, weighing her choices…knowing like so many other things in her life she didn’t have one.
“Okay,” she sucked in a deep breath and nodded, “okay.”
Lizzy was her responsibility anyway, one of her very own Angels, she had to figure out a way to help her…if she would let her help her.
Pulling it together she straightened her shoulders and took her bag from Will, “let’s just hope I don’t get detained for my invalid passport.”
“Yes, do be careful. I wouldn’t doubt it if they’ve increased security…terrorists could be involved.”
“I would have guessed as much,” terrorists meaning her Uncle and his men. The Angel’s have been referring to them as such since long before she had joined their ranks.
She was ready to leave when the load in her arms registered with her slow brain.
“Will wait,” she called to him, “if you know my privileges have been…revoked, then why are you still helping me?”
For this he didn’t stay behind the partition, instead nodding to the door around the corner and meeting her outside the confines of the tech area.
“Sera,” he nearly whispered, “if there’s one thing I’ve learned since leaving the Angels it’s that you need to decide on your own who to trust to do the right thing. They’re not the end-all-be-all of the world, and just because they say you might be no good doesn’t mean for a second I believe it.”
“Will…” she trailed off, knowing how much trouble he could get in for knowingly helping her.
The Angels would ruin him if they felt like he was working against them. Sure there was strength in numbers and being a part of their organization meant for support in an untold amount of ways…but the opposite was very true as well.
“I’m not afraid of them Sera, and neither should you be. What you’re doing, what’s in that bag, no one could constitute that as the wrong thing.”
“But what if they catch you helping me?”
“Don’t worry, my security cameras are having issues all of a sudden. I think I lost an entire day’s worth of footage,” he winked at her, “which means you were never here.”
She nodded taking the dismissal for what is was and hurried out the door as Will pulled the metal grate across the service window.
Only being about a block from the market she walked over, grabbed the groceries, and relieved them of a cart as she carried her supplies away. She didn’t think anyone would look twice at her since she had purposely dressed to emulate the homeless she was on her search for. And thanks to the fact that she had yet to run a brush through her hair after sleeping on the train she figured she had the disheveled thing down pretty well. She had traded her boots in for a shabby pair of sneakers, changed back into her ill fitting jeans and coat once cleaned, and even decided to wear Gage’s shirt versus her sweater just to finish the look off. The sweater fit after all, and if she was supposed to look like a street kid then that didn’t mean well fitting clothes.
