The pristine, high-tech glass of the Hong Kong Shatterdome felt almost alien compared to the salt-crusted metal of the early days. Raleigh Becket stood beside Stacker Pentecost on the elevated catwalk, looking out over the bay where the remaining Jaegers were docked—Gipsy Danger, Striker Eureka, Crimson Typhoon, and Cherno Alpha.
"They're the best left, Raleigh," Stacker said, his deep voice cutting through the heavy hum of arc welders and diesel generators. "Every crew down there has held their coastlines through sheer grit. But the Kaiju are adapting."
Before Raleigh could answer, the heavy hydraulic doors behind them hissed open.
The heavy, rhythmic click of reinforced pilot boots echoed against the steel mesh flooring. A taller woman—easily 5-foot-10—walked past them without looking up, focused entirely on a diagnostic tablet in her hands. Her striking, silver-white hair was pinned up into a tight, practical bun. Despite being off-duty inside the drydocks, she was already sealed into her pilot suit, the magnetic connectors on her shoulders and spine humming softly.
Raleigh blinked, tracking her movement toward a secluded shadow bay at the far end of the hangar. "Marshal... who is that? I thought Striker was the only Mark 5 tech operational."
Stacker didn't look away from her back. A subtle hint of profound respect crossed the Marshal's hardened features.
"You're looking at the first and last person to consistently solo-pilot a Jaeger and live to tell the tale," Stacker said quietly. "Arianna De Hana."
Raleigh turned, incredulous. "Solo? That's impossible. The neural load alone would burn out a single pilot's brain in under two minutes. It nearly– " He stopped himself, the ghost of Yancy flinching in his mind. "It kills people."
"For anyone else, yes," Stacker replied, turning to face Raleigh. "Nobody knows how her mind handles the Ghost Drift without tearing itself apart. But while the rest of the world relied on dual-pilots, Arianna held the entire coastline of the Philippines alone for ten full years."
Raleigh looked past Stacker toward the shadowed bay. Looming in the darkness was a machine that shouldn't exist. It had the brutal, towering, heavy-plate iron silhouette of a Mark 2—a brawny, immovable tank built to withstand brute force. But attached to its massive arms were sleek, high-frequency plasma blades and modular energy cannons scavenged and engineered from modern Mark 4 and 5 designs.
"Is that a Mark 2 frame?" Raleigh asked, leaning over the railing.
"Summer Demeter," Stacker confirmed. "Her first drop was an anomaly. A Category 4 breached early in her deployment before anyone had ever seen one. She went in with a stock Mark 2 build and took it down single-handedly, but the Jaeger was nearly scrapped in the process. Instead of letting us decommission it, she rebuilt it herself. Upgraded the armaments to future-spec, added close-combat edge weapons, but kept the original nuclear core."
Stacker looked over at Raleigh with a dead-serious expression.
Raleigh watched as Arianna climbed the gantry toward Summer Demeter's con-pod. She didn't pause for a break. She didn't take off her suit. She simply lived in the shadow of her machine, waiting for the alarm to sound.
"She doesn't wait for the drop call," Raleigh remarked, a sense of genuine awe cutting through his exhaustion.
"No," Stacker said. "She stays ready so she never has to get ready. Respect her, Raleigh. Down here, she's the best of the best."
