The wind blew through the trees of the Astriel Forest, making the silver leaves dance beneath the moonlight. By the edge of a river, a little girl ran barefoot through the damp grass.
She laughed. A light, innocent laugh.
She did not know that this night would change her life forever.
— Elara! Come back here! her mother called from the path.
The little girl turned around before stopping near the water. The moon's reflection trembled on the surface of the river.
Then something caught her attention.
A light.
Faint.
Almost invisible.
It came from her wrist. Elara frowned. Beneath her skin, a strange silver symbol glowed, one she had never seen before.
The light pulsed once.
Then twice.
Then disappeared.
The little girl remained motionless.
— Mom?
Her voice had become hesitant.
Her mother came over to her and followed her gaze.
When she saw the mark, her face became as pale as the moon.
— Where did you get that?
— I don't know...
The woman immediately grabbed her daughter's arm.
Her hands were trembling.
— Listen to me carefully, Elara.
For the first time in her life, the little girl heard fear in her mother's voice.
Real fear.
— You must never show this mark to anyone.
— Why?
Her mother opened her mouth.
But no words came out.
As if the answer were too terrible.
Finally, she shook her head.
— Because some people would be willing to kill for it.
Elara's heart tightened.
Far away, somewhere in the darkness of the forest, a branch snapped.
Her mother suddenly looked up.
Someone was watching them.
She was certain of it.
Without waiting, she took her daughter into her arms and moved away from the river. The night suddenly seemed colder.
More threatening.
And as they disappeared among the trees, the mark on Elara's wrist began to glow again. As if it were answering a call.
A call that had come from very far away.
