"Hide!"

The commanding voice of Papa had instructed, even in the face of danger Papa remained bold. Hide was his only instruction. His only wish for his wife and daughters while he took his second child: the boy, to join him in his fight against the intruders.

I could not hide. I could never hide because the fear that enveloped me in this dark cave whispered to me. It told me that my brother would be no more, Papa would be no more as well and so. . .I, Midori had to fight. This was our land, and they had no right to take us away.

Through my body, I felt a surge of power, one of might, move within me. I got up, evading the eyes of Mama and my sister, who bundled themselves up shivering in fear and I ran, out of the cave, ignoring their calls and pleas that I should return. Ignoring them.

The hot, humid air stung me but not as much as the display of cruelty from the invaders, the tussle of power between my people and them. My people were fighting a losing game for they fought with objects that were meaningless in front of theirs. Piles of fallen people drenched in blood, laid on the ground, their familiar faces brought back memories of the time when we would sit under the tree and listen to our seer's tales.

The seer!

Yes. If anyone could provide a solution to this mayhem, it was her. Her years spent on this earth had endowed her with wisdom surpassing anyone else. In my village, she was wiser than the King, even wiser than my father-a man who crowned the king. I ran as fast as my little legs could take me to the seer's hut, only to find the hut in a devastating state. Not only the hut but the owner as well-she was laid out on the ground like flat bread, partially lifeless.

In shock, I went to where she laid and lifted her frail body, placing her bald head on my laps. My mind shuttled round; I could not call for help and I could not let her die. Her eyes forced itself open, she stared at me. I did not know what to say, so I wimped.

Her saggy hands caressed my face and she said, "green eyes...the liberator." In our local dialect.

Don't go.

With a smile on her face, her eyes closed slowly and in a minute, she was gone. I prayed for her soul before leaving her to rest, and then I got up and ran still in search of my family. Fear in the form of goosebumps appeared all over my body, but I strengthened myself. I feared that the same fate that had befallen the seer would befall them.

Not too far from where the seer's hut was. I spotted my brother in a fierce battle with one of the foreigners. My brother's hand went back and forth against the man-who had no weapon. It was a game of fists. My brother put up a fight but he was only a young boy whose prowess could not be compared to that of the muscular man in the blood-coloured attire.

I could not stand and watch.
I had to do something. With the speed of a cheetah, I charged towards the foreigner, leaping on top his back, dragging and pulling his body down like a bear cub faced against a mighty bear but it amounted to nothing as I was thrown off like a piece of filth.

"Midori!" My brother screamed in agitation and charged towards the man, fighting him with the few strengths he had.
My instance kicked in and I got back up, spotted a cutlass that was lain by the side of where I was thrown. I grabbed hold of it, moved towards the man and with a clumsy swing of the tool, I aimed at his legs. He was down, screaming. I did not know he could scream of pain.i didn't think it was something they could feel. My brother, taken aback by my move, removed the cutlass from my hand and finished the deed.

My brother threw the cutlass away, got a hold of me and wrapped his bare chest around my body. It calmed me. For a moment, I thought it was over.
I should have known it wasn't.
One was down but that didn't mean they were all down.
A troop of them surrounded us, pointing their weapons at us. We surrendered, and they proceeded to stomp on us with their feet before we were bundled up in chains along with the others that had survived. We were taken into the ships they had arrived with and held in a gloomy place where my brother and I ended up regrouping with Papa, Mama and my sister.
We spent days and nights in that ship. Most of us didn't make it due to the harsh conditions and their bodies were dumped into the vast blue ocean and those of us that did, arrived at the destination- the kingdom. Their land.

Our faces were filled with despair, for we knew from the stories we were told that this was the beginning of many troubles to come.
