The loud creaking of the dock as waves hit it woke you up. you fluttered your eyes open before leaning up to look at your rod that was set up hanging off the side of the docks fence.
"for fuck sakes.." you mumbled to yourself under your breath.
nothing.
not a single bite.
it had been days since you have seen any wildlife. usually, this deep in the forest wildlife was at every corner. deer walking around in small groups, rabbits and squirrels running around. cows and pigs occasionally wondering around. birds chirping in the morning as your alarm to get up. but ever since a few weeks ago the wildlife slowly faded.
it started with the deer and cows. the town investigated almost everyone's houses thinking someone went around and killed all of them or overly hunted them. slowly they almost went extinct in the area you were in. and just days after that the pigs and rabbits became more rare.
prices sky rocketed by the day for meat. everyday seemingly the demand got so vague even you couldn't buy any yourself.
fishing became everyone's way to eat. it only lasted a few days before the fish seemingly vanished. villagers didn't know if everyone had over fished them, or something was poured in the higher stream to kill them. but the dead fish that slowly would float down stream didn't scream overfished.
you had to sit there for hours for a bite. and with that, you weren't a very good fisher, never had been. so you either lost it or pulled up a catfish.. and you think you'd rather starve then eat those.
you had been surviving off scraps you had. maintaining your eating habits and trying to walk into town to trade some of your art pieces to maybe get bread or cattle on rare occasions. sometimes walking back with as little as bread or dried fruit.
maybe moving away this deep in the forest wasn't a good idea. years ago when you tried to desperately move out of your parents when you wanted somewhere to yourself. and far away from any town or human. you wished to live by yourself and only yourself.
as soon as you turned 18, you left. and cut contact with your whole family. although you lost contact with almost all your friends, you didn't care. as long as it ment peace you didn't mind.
you were still in contact with a friend. her name was Ava, she was everything you ever wanted to be. and that's what pushed you away from her.
she was always the better looking one, got more attention, looks, free stuff and just a upper hand in life. over time, as you got older you despised her. but couldn't stop being friends with her. she at least kept you from being completely lonely in this world. and pushed you to go out more.
